So where does one begin with a 2-minute trailer?
Tonight across North America, 76 select IMAX theaters screened a sneak peak of Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice. So what’s the big deal you say? After all, late last week a Portuguese language trailer was illegally posted on the internet. This was followed by the release of the official trailer one day later. So what makes this IMAX trailer unique? Short answer: 8 seconds. And no, I’m not referring to the Luke Perry bull riding flop. A few hours ago at the AMC Boston Common 19 theater, 300+ fans, many dawning Superman baseball hats and Batman t-shirts, watched an extended teaser trailer for Dawn of Justice. People expected 20-30 minutes of clips and behind-the-scene footage. Well, suffice to say, “You don’t always get what you want.” After all, you were told you’d be seeing the teaser trailer, so there is truth in advertising. Yet no one walked out disappointed. Movie posters were given away along with a special gift, one pass to see the film next year.
The teaser trailer began with an introduction from the film’s director Zack Snyder:
“Hey guys, I’m Zack Snyder. And I’d love to take a second to say thank you so much for coming out tonight to see this first ever teaser trailer for Batman v Superman film. You’re seeing it tonight as you know in glorious IMAX, so that’s awesome. But I would ask you please not to record it. Alright let’s check it out.”
The teaser trailer concluded with an epilogue, once again from the film’s director Zack Snyder:
“Okay, so before we play it again I want you to watch next time for the native IMAX shots that we did, the last few shots before the ah, title and then when they charge at each other at the end were shot all in native IMAX so you’ll see a lot of that in the actual film when it comes out next year. The other thing though I do want you to keep in mind is that that one sequence when they run at each other at the very end of the piece, that is only going to be seen tonight in this theater when you see ah the trailer online or at the front of a movie, that part is going to be lopped off because I wanted to have something special for you guys so let’s roll.”
The teaser trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice can be viewed here. And my hunch is that we’ll see a lot more come this Summer, possibly a complete scene at San Diego Comic Con. All pictures are the property and courtesy of Warner Bros.
