Moshi Aerio Messenger Bag Review

Before ever hearing of Moshi, the west coast maker of premium backpacks, shoulder bags, headphones, protective cases, and other digital lifestyle products, an event took place in San Francisco where a new laptop messenger bag (and more) was introduced. Fast forward to mid-2017, and Moshi has what some consider one of the best messenger bags for men or women since. When I finally got my hands on one, I was immediately impressed with its look and feel. So without any further delay, let’s take a closer look in this Moshi Aerio messenger bag review.

• Modern look, lightweight design
• Three handsome color schemes
• Durable fabrics and materials
• Ample padding where needed

• $150 price may be deemed high by some
• No water bottle holder

Moshi Aerio Messenger Bag Review

Per the press release: “The newest addition to Moshi’s line of stylish, tech-savvy bags, Aerio is an ergonomic messenger bag featuring premium materials and modern design.”

One Stylish Modern Design

When I state that his laptop messenger bag looks great, it’s not an overstatement.

From the outside, you may have noticed that Aerio is made from the same high-resilience polyester materials with the same weather-resistant surface treatment that appear on the Arcus backpack. (See the inline post of our backpack review below.) The similarities don’t end there. Aerio’s two original color patterns and its lining were transferred to the Arcus as well.

On the front and rear, you’ll notice two left-to-right brown zippers with tan-colored vegan leather trim. You can’t help but notice the front and top rear zippered areas stand out, and each zipper handle is unique. The front metal handle is rounded with a stamped or engraved ‘moshi’ logo. The rear metal handle has an embossed surface for better grip.Inside the full-length rear compartment is a pocket for business cards, larger documents, and files, as well as a strap w/carabiner for your keys. I’ve seen this carabiner feature on other bags and found it most useful. Just above/below this rear zipper is padded top handle and the rear trolley strap for transport on rolling luggage, respectively.

As stated in the Arcus review, “the color combination of this titanium gray backpack is gorgeous. The zippers and straps are of high-quality, and the stitching is put together well.” The charcoal black and the harder-to-find herringbone gray versions are equally attractive.

Regarding this herringbone gray variant release, Michael Leonhard, President of Moshi said the following: “Our 2016 Fall/Winter Bag Collection takes you from boardroom to happy hour with effortless, elegant style. Reminiscent of a high-end, tailored business suit, our limited edition seasonal collection uses a sharkskin color to complement Fall/Winter color palettes while its intricate herringbone pattern adds body and texture to the bags.”

How I would have loved to see the latter.Flipping the messenger flap over, you’ll notice another zippered compartment as well as a hidden one. Are two pockets needed here? In my opinion ‘No,’ but the addition of the hidden pocket adds to the character of the bag, and an overall better look. Still, these compartments aren’t what’s best here. This is reserved for the discrete locking hardware. Without the hidden locks, the Aerio messenger bag would be more ordinary and less modern looking.

On the underside, there’s a thicker, more durable padded surface to protect contents against drops.

Closing out the exterior, there’s a lengthy, durable, and adjustable shoulder strap with a well-padded, sliding, and removable shoulder cushion. What you may not notice and I probably wouldn’t have had I not read everything is the proprietary ViscoStrap™. This viscoelastic strap was designed to mitigate shoulder strain. As someone who uses shoulder and messenger bags regularly, I’ll try anything which can alleviate that strain.

It’s What’s On The Inside That Counts

I always liked this phrase.

The inside of the Aerio is broken down into two compartments. One is a thickly padded laptop compartment which protects your 15″ laptop in case of drops. Should the bag get upside down, you need not worry about the laptop sliding out. A Velcro strap holds it in place.

The second has an expandable padded pocket that supports (encased) headphones like Moshi’s Avanti, a padded 10″ tablet sleeve, and three thinner pockets for items like toothbrushes, pens, or a battery charger like the Moshi IonBank. This second and spacious main compartment is no less than 4″ wide at the bottom. You can fit an entire change set of clothes, plus have room to spare for a large sandwich.

If you haven’t noticed by now, the lining of this Aerio bag is luxurious, and it’s throughout. It’s what you would see on similar, stylish bags 2-3x the price, for example, from the likes of Tumi. Bags within Moshi’s 2017 lineup also contain this lining.

This messenger bag weighs 32.8 oz and has dimensions of 16.93″ x 5.91″ x 11.02″. For you Metric System users, the Aerio’s weight is 930 grams, and its dimensions are 43 x 15 x 28 cm.

Conclusion

For what it offers, this Aerio messenger bag delivers on its promises. It protects your digital lifestyle products in a stylish, modern design. When compared against bags from other premium brands, I believe the $150 price tag is fair.

Whether you’re an urban professional, male or female, it doesn’t matter, or someone who likes to accessorize with a good-looking product, I believe you’ll be most happy with the Aerio messenger bag. Don’t be surprised when this bag lasts a decade or more. It’s made that well.

Back in January at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, I got to spend some time with the good folks at Moshi, the west coast maker of premium backpacks, shoulder bags, headphones, protective cases, and more. As with any brand at CES, I got to see a sample of their upcoming products. To my delight, they were about to introduce the Arcus backpack, an all-around, versatile backpack which doubles as a professional photography bag. My first impression was very positive, and I looked forward to reviewing this in the coming months. So without any further delay, let’s take a closer look in this Moshi Arcus camera backpack review.

• Zippers can be a little tricky getting around corners
• Shoulder straps could use a bit more padding

Moshi Arcus Camera Backpack Review

When you’ve got a lot of great things to say about a backpack, you almost don’t know where to begin.

Allow me to provide you with some background. I’ve got about a dozen shoulder bags and backpacks, give or take a couple. And they’ve all been accumulated over the past few years. I think it’s safe to say that I’ve become somewhat of a backpack/shoulder bag collector, maybe even an expert.

In doing research for this post, it became somewhat of a challenge to compare the Moshi Arcus backpack only against others from much larger brands. I make this statement coming from a lot of angles. For one, the Arcus is is a multipurpose backpack which for all intense purposes is a stylish camera backpack. If I were to compare it against camera backpacks from such brands as Peak Design, Tenba, or Think Tank Photo, then it’s on par with features, quality, and price. I feel this speaks highly of the Arcus.But I also have to look at this comparison through a fashion lens. As Moshi is a premium product brand, I need to compare their product(s) against those from Kelly Moore, ONA Bags, and VINTA, just to name a few. So not only am I reviewing a camera backpack against those from (what I refer to as) mass-produced, non-stylish brands, but also those from the smaller, more fashionable brands.

Open up one of those large photography product catalogs, or visit any of the above-stated brands’ websites, and you’ll see that the Arcus stands against them. It turns out that this backpack is well-priced against its competition.

On a side note, I took some pleasure comparing Moshi’s Arcus versus the VINTA S-Series.

A Solid Backpack Design

When I mean this backpack has a solid design, it’s beyond the literal.

Starting from the top, the Arcus backpack comes with a crush-resistant compartment. As someone who travels around with more than one pair of glasses, I often worry about the condition of those that aren’t being worn. Now you can worry less about your phone, (sun)glasses, or in-ear headphones.

Taking this up a notch, you should know that this compartment’s surface has been treated to be weather-resistant. Not only will you worry less about items being crushed, but you’ll also worry less about these items getting wet.

Note: This is not the first Moshi product with a crush-resistant feature. Their Avanti headphones come with a crush-resistant case. The sound the compartment (or case) makes is like knocking on a door. It’s some mighty fine protection. How cool is this?Entry into this compartment is through a hidden zipper above the main strap. Tucked away inside is a tan-colored vegan leather strap. All four vegan leather straps are accented with brown zippers. The Arcus backpack has four more brown zippers and one hidden tan zipper, but these surround metal straps.

Why all nine zippers don’t have straps of the same color or material is a question I can’t answer. What I can say is that the choices Moshi made here work very well. You can’t help but notice how the front and top rear zippered areas stand out. The front metal handle is unique in that it’s the only one that’s rounded. Plus, it contains a stamped or engraved ‘moshi’ logo. This rounded handle complements the square metal ‘moshi’ logo located on the lower right front of the bag.

The color combination of this titanium-gray backpack is gorgeous. The zippers and straps are of high quality, and the stitching is put together well. The charcoal black version is equally attractive.

Working our way down from the crush-resistant top there’s a zipper which wraps around three-quarters of the bag. This zipper opens the main compartment, and what a spacious compartment it is. You can fit an entire change set of clothes, plus a pair of shoes, and have room to spare. On the underside of the top compartment, there’s even a netted storage space for smaller items. This time, closure is handled via velcro instead of a zipper.

The Arcus multi-function backpack weighs 44 oz and has dimensions of 9.25″ x 5.91″ x 18.9″.There’s one other way into the main compartment, and it’s through a side-zipper. It’s what you typically see on today’s photography backpacks. More on this below.

If you haven’t noticed by now, the lining on this Arcus backpack is luxurious. It’s what you would expect to see on similar, stylish bags and backpacks 2-3x the price, for example, from the likes of Tumi. Other bags in Moshi’s 2017 lineup also contain this lining. You even get a large storage bag for the Arcus. If you’re not using the backpack for an extended period, store it, and prevent it from getting accidentally damaged around your home. It’s these little things that set the premium brands apart from the lesser rivals.

To prevent the Arcus’ high-resilience polyester material from getting dirty, scuffed, or worse, the backpack’s underside has two rubber feet.

The Backside

I’ve already taken you through the front and top so let’s now head over to the rear.

The Arcus backpack comes with a padded air-mesh lined adjustable shoulder straps with a similarly lined vented back. There’s even an adjustable, detachable sternum strap (which I always use.) The bag also has eight attachment points on the shoulder straps. If you’ve got something needing to be attached, these are the places to do it.

The backside incorporates as Moshi puts it “two discrete zippered pockets.” If you want to hide those items that’ll make you most upset if lost or stolen (identification cards, wallet, passport, etc.), then I suggest one of these two pockets to hide them in. My preference would be the top pocket.

The electronics device compartment is a beautifully, well-organized one. In addition to the lining mentioned above, this full-length (zippered) compartment has individually padded spaces for a 15″ laptop, a full-size tablet, a phablet, and two smartphones. I know they fit because I tested all five pockets with my mobile devices.Like any other backpack, there are two sides. One side contains two adjustable straps, the lower of which has a pocket for the holding the largest of water bottles. Better yet, you can slide something like an umbrella or tripod through and have your drink container snug.

As mentioned above, the second way into the main compartment is through a side zipper. If you can’t reach the item you’re looking for through the top; maybe the side will do. If you’re using this backpack for photography, you have the option of using the camera insert.

There’s also another zippered pocket here, best used for easy access to a small notepad.

Arcus Camera Insert Bag

As typically seen in many of today’s best camera backpacks, Arcus has the ability to protect a DSLR or Micro 4/3 camera, 2-3 lenses, and more with the Arcus Camera Insert (sold separately.) Slide the padded insert into the main compartment with its opening lined up to the backpack’s side entry and now you have easy access to your camera and its accessories. The insert is microfiber-lined in addition to having three customizable dividers.

If this camera case is something you desire, my advice would be to purchase it directly from Moshi. When you buy both the backpack and camera insert, the latter is only $5. If purchased separately, the camera insert will set you back $30. And for some reason, it’s $50 on Amazon.
The Arcus camera insert weighs 11.64 oz and has dimensions of 10.63″ x 4.33″ x 10.04″.

Conclusion

For what it offers, this “lightweight, full-sized backpack that carries all of your gear in a stylish and modern design” delivers on its promises. If you break it down to all its high-end features, I think you can justify its $230 price tag.

Now I’m sure many of you are trying to wrap your head around the price tag. Full disclosure–so was I at first, but that moment passed. I can thank researching this post for that.

The Ultimate LG G6 Review on Verizon

Last weekend the unthinkable happened. As I was entering my car ready to depart the city, my Moto X Pure mobile phone had other plans. As I turned right to open the driver’s side door, my phone went left, flew out of my hand, and came face-to-face with the sidewalk. The Moto X’s screen has a crack problem greater than the pavement it struck. RIP good friend; you were a great phone while you lasted. But there is an upside to this story. The folks at Verizon were kind enough to loan me the new LG G6 for review. Overnight, my mindset had changed. I went from being a product reviewer to a shopper and future buyer of a new mobile phone, possibly the one I had been reviewing. For over a month, I had the pleasure of testing LG’s flagship mobile phone, and what a pleasure it was. So without further delay, let’s take a closer look in this LG G6 review.

Pros:
• Beautiful, creative design
• Near top of the line specifications
• 5.7″ Quad HD+ FullVision Display
• USB Type C connection
• Qualcomm® Quick Charge™ 3.0

Cons:
• Average battery life of 3300 mAh
• While it’s IP68 rated, it’s not waterproof
• Very slippery when held with a bare hand
• Texting not as good as other phones/carriers
• ROM limited to 32 GB, 64 GB not available

LG G6 Review – Design and Features

While I’m saddened by the loss of my Moto X Pure, at least I wasn’t carrying the LG G6 with me that night.

As far as top-tier phones go, this model is very similar to those currently available from Google, Motorola, Samsung, and Sony. All have top (or near top) of the line specifications with regards to the camera, screen, CPU, and GPU. When compared to its predecessor, the LG G5, there are nothing but design improvements. The G6 is shorter in both height and width, but a hair thicker in depth. We’re talking differences from 0.07″ down to 0.01″. Dimensional changes like these are barely noticeable by sight.

If you recall, the G5 has a modular design which consumers and reviewers disliked. The screen size has increased from 5.3″ to 5.7″, which is very noticeable. How does the LG G6 compare against its predecessors?

Among reviewers, there’s been some discussion about the placement of the G6’s power and volume buttons. For you right-handed users, the issue regarding the volume buttons won’t matter one bit. For you left-handed users, this is where a problem arises.

The placement of the volume buttons on the upper left is an excellent choice, especially from those of us who happen to be right-handed. Now, the index finger can rest firmly on the chassis while your thumb can adjust the volume. This placement allows for better grip of the phone.

The power button remains on the backside directly beneath the two cameras. While I haven’t completely gotten used to its location, I have accepted it. It’ll continue to grow on me.Most, if not all reviewers, have failed to view button locations in the following way. I use a Manfrotto TwistGrip smartphone clamp and Compact Action tripod with this phone. These devices allow me to take better pictures and video of nearly anything. Because you want to balance your phone, place the clamp along the center-line of your phone. Earlier mobile phones like the Moto X Pure have their volume buttons in the way, hence the problem. With the LG G6, there’s no button interference; thus one of my biggest headaches disappears as the clamp correctly grabs the phone.

Concerning the design, the chassis is too slippery in my hands. The back panel, like the sides, is without texture. If you want to ensure the LG G6 stays in your hand, a protective case is a must. I recommend the Warrior Case from Trident Case and the Presidio Grip from Speck.

More Design and Features

The display on the LG G6 is a thing of beauty. The Quad HD+ resolution of 2880 x 1440 pixels and 564 ppi is amazing. The display (known as FullVision) has an 18:9 aspect ratio. If you want to watch something recorded in Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range, the G6 can accommodate you.

Like it’s predecessors, the display contains Corning® Gorilla® Glass. The G6 has a front screen and rear camera made of Gorilla® Glass 3 while the backside has Gorilla® Glass 5. The G6 doesn’t have Shattershield™. If you want this feature, you’ll have to look at the Moto Z Force Droid.

There’s also a fingerprint reader for those of you who are interested.

The entire body has an ingress protection of 68 which offers a fair amount of water and dust resistance. Should you happen to drop this phone into the shallow end of a pool, you can relax. “The device is suitable for continuous immersion in water under 1.5 meters up to 30 minutes.” You can learn more about this and MIL-STD-810G testing on LG’s Quality page.

In case you haven’t heard, the micro USB port has been replaced with one USB-C connection. I applaud this decision. Charging of the 3300 mAh battery and data transfer are done via this connection. This phone comes equipped with Qualcomm® Quick Charge™ 3.0. The 3.5 mm headphone jack is located at the top right of the device.

Storage and memory are unchanged from the G5. Like other flagship mobile phones, this one incorporates 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. The phone has 32 GB of onboard memory (ROM) with support up to 2 TB. Shame there’s no option for 64 GB on board. Also, finding micro SD cards over 256 GB is a laborious task.

Front and Rear Cameras

There’s so much to discuss on the three cameras of the LG G6 that I’m not sure where to begin. In fact, it would be possible to write an article on these features alone. Let’s start with the settings.

In Photo/Video Settings, the first category you want to check out is photo size. From the eight available choices, you can select the size and aspect ratio of the photo you’re about to take. There are two options for 4:3, 16:9, 18:9, and 1:1. The photo sizes range from 2.1 MP all the way to 13 MP. It’s safe to say you’ll find one size and ratio that you’ll come to love.

Next up is the category for video resolution. Here there are six choices in UHD, FHD, and HD modes. Within FHD, there’s even one for 60 frames per second filming.

The aforementioned is followed by more than a handful of general settings:

• Camera roll
• High dynamic range
• Timer
• Cheese shutter
• Steady recording

• Tag locations
• Grid
• Add signature
• Simple view
• Help

I’ve gone through all ten of these and found all but one to be most useful. The ability to add a (copyright) signature to my photos is a big deal. The capacity to reduce motion blur in video is huge. And for all you younger readers, the Cheese shutter will come in very handy. Why hit a button when voice recognition can do it for you? Go ahead and say “Kimchi,” “Whiskey,” or “Smile” and see the results.

The second camera setting is Mode. The G6 comes with eight of these to choose from:

• Popout
• Auto
• Snap
• Panorama

• Slo-mo
• 360 Panorama
• Time-lapse
• Food

Rather than discussing all eight of these in detail, which could get boring, let’s cover a few. I highly suggest you demo these modes at a Verizon store or Best Buy.

Whether it’s a photo or video, Popout is a trip. Simply put, it’s an image within a frame. You’ve got four image choices: Fisheye, B&W, Vignette, and Lens Blur. And you can combine any-or-all of these and get very creative. There are also five frame styles which allow you to add your images in horizontal, vertical, or centered frames. One can easily get lost in all the choices.

Capturing a Panorama/360 Panorama in photo or video is plenty of fun. The LG G6 captures it well. This feature has become widely adopted commercially and popular. I dare you to take a panorama at an airport, a shopping mall, or even at a house for sale. Below is a Panorama image of my home.

The third setting is for filtering. Much like those on Snapchat, Instagram, Pixlr, and Snapseed, the G6 comes with nine active view filters. By this I mean you can see all nine at once and then choose the one you like best.

The funny thing is, I still transfer these images into Pixlr or Snapseed for even further refinement.

The fourth setting is camera swap. Switch over to the front side camera and you’ll notice sliding scale effects like skin tone, lighting, and filtering. Once you’ve captured the shot, you can then share it via social media, messaging, email, etc. I’m not much of a selfie taker, so I’ll leave this setting to all you younger folk.

We wrap up the settings with how you want to take your photos and videos. There are selections for manual, auto, and square modes. Auto mode is self-explanatory so I’ll leave this one alone. The Manual mode is a beast! If you truly want to know how to utilize the camera, always take photos and videos in Manual.

Manual Mode

Manual mode photography and video is by far the greatest feature of the LG G6 smartphone.

Taking photos in manual took me back to when I first learned how to use a Canon DSLR camera. With the exception of popout framing, all the general settings exist in manual mode.

There’s a histogram for both of the two 13 MP rear cameras. The display shows the aperture value to lessen any confusion. Next up are white balance, focus, exposure value of -2 to +2, ISO up to 3200, and an incredibly wide-ranging shutter speed. Tracking focus allows for the subject matter to come out crystal clear. There’s even an auto selection which allows for the camera to select what it believes to be the best manual shot.

I can’t begin to tell you how fun-filled this was to experiment with. Furthermore, you won’t need to purchase a starter camera, thus saving you some money as you’ll learn manual photography with this mobile phone.

4K Ultra HD Video Recording

Since more and more of us are capturing video, let me touch on the camcorder capabilities of the G6.

If you’re using the front camera, there’s an FHD camcorder. On the rear, there’s one better, the 4K UHD camcorder. Furthermore, Hi-Fi recording is a possibility.

Under the settings, there are categories for video resolution, frame rate, and eight others. Here there are seven resolution choices: one for UHD, and three each for FHD and HD modes. Depending on the selection of resolution, you can select a frame rate anywhere from 1 fps up to 120 fps. Experiment with it and you’ll see what I mean.

Additional settings include Bit rate, Hi-Fi, Timer, Steady recording, Tracking focus, Tag locations, Grid, and Help. Feel free to add one of the nine filters and flash/no flash and you’re off to the races.

Under manual video, the display fields are just like those within manual photo. Adjust the white balance, focus, exposure value, ISO, shutter speed to whatever you deem best.

The G6 has video playback up to 4K UHD, and codec support of H.264 (AVC) and H.265 (HEVC.)

Final Thoughts

Roughly a year ago, LG introduced the G5, their 2016 flagship phone. After spending millions of dollars launching the product with commercials starring actor Jason Statham, sales have been a disaster. Reviews weren’t much better. The biggest problem with this phone was its modular design. Who wants to take apart a phone? If you want a modular design, go with the Moto Z.

This year, LG went back to basics and got things right with their G6.

As I stated in the opening paragraph, I’ve gone from a reviewer to a shopper overnight. Over the past six months, after having reviewed more than a few top-tier phones for over a month each, if I could choose one to keep, it would be the LG G6. I’m thoroughly impressed with this mobile phone, and frankly, would prefer not to give it back.

This phone is an easy contender against other top-tier mobile phones from the likes of Google, Lenovo, and Samsung. In fact, we prefer the LG G6 to the Google Pixel which we believe is a toy phone and the Moto Z Droid which we happened to like very much.

The LG G6 smartphone is a welcome successor to the G5. We’ve read some comments on LG’s website from (presumed) G6 owners and haven’t encountered any of their issues on our sample.

While the G6 comes with some unnecessary bloatware, it isn’t much to concern yourselves with. Package contents include the phone, charging outlet, USB-A to USB-C cable, and micro SD slot opener.

So after everything mentioned above, I’ve got but one question for you. Is this your next smartphone?

Introducing the Moshi IonBank 5K Charger with Built-In USB Cables

Over the past few years, I’ve reviewed a handful of mobile battery chargers. While most rated average to below-average, the current crop of power banks have rated much higher. Moshi recently introduced their latest IonBank 5K and 10K models. Hoping the recent string of well-received power banks continued we had the opportunity to review their IonBank 5K for 2017. Much like the latest mobile phones, Moshi incorporated a USB-C port into their designs. So without further adieu, let’s take a closer look at one such charger in this Moshi IonBank 5K review.

Moshi IonBank 5K Review

Design and Features

The Moshi IonBank 5K power bank offers much in the way of design and convenience. These are its strengths.

For one, it’s slender, more so than a man’s wallet, and will comfortably fit into your pants back pocket. It also has something the high majority of portable chargers don’t have, and that’s integrated USB cables. Sure, there are plenty of chargers on the market with a USB-C port, but only a few (such as the Incipio Offgrid 8000 mAh or Flux Charger Plus) have an actual built-in cable. Moshi’s IonBank has one leg up on these two brands with two built-in cables, one USB-A and one USB-C. Furthermore, both cables are hidden under the vegan leather flap. Based on my research Moshi is the only brand (premium or otherwise) that offers more than one cable or this hideaway feature.

The downside is the battery capacity. Per its description, the IonBank 5K has a capacity of 5150 mAh. While this is enough to recharge the newest Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S models, it can only do so 1.5x before it requires its own recharge.

The IonBank 5K is an attractive product. It combines a gunmetal gray aluminum case with a vegan leather accent. Underneath the accent is what makes the IonBank stand out from the competition–its USB cable hideaway. As seen in the first photo, here’s the USB-A and USB-C cables.

As you see in the images above, there’s the power button, LED indication, the input USB-A port, and the two hidden output ports.

Like many of the chargers on the market, you can simultaneously charge the IonBank while charging two mobile devices. Unlike most other brands, you don’t need to worry about the USB cables.

LED indication is easy to understand. Think of each light as a quarter’s worth of power. If one light is flashing, the IonBank is charging, or it’s a low battery warning.

The IonBank 5K has dimensions of 4.76″ x 3.23″ x 0.51″ and weighs in at 5.71 ounces. Fully charging the battery takes approximately 3-4 hours.

For those of you who pay attention to specifications, here’s what you’re looking for.

If you’re looking for a mobile battery charger with around 5K mAh of capacity, you can get one for ¼ of the IonBank’s $80 price. You should note that you would be buying a charger with fewer features. With that said, the Moshi IonBank 5K is at or near the top of its product category regarding features.

If you’re looking at a competitors product without a built-in USB-C cable, just remember that you’ll need one to connect to your phone. For example, look at the mophie powerstation XL power bank. While that charger is $10 less than the IonBank, it requires you to purchase a USB-C cable which costs $20.

Guess which mobile product costs more now?

We’ve looked at products from ADATA, Anker, RAVPower, ZeroLemon, and more. While they manufacture good-to-great power banks, they’re all slightly different in size, capacity, and features. Searching for a battery charger to a mobile device used to be an easy thing. If it could charge your phone once and had a USB port, we were good-to-go. As mobile phones got larger, they required a greater battery life. Thus chargers had to increase in size too. Now it’s 2017 and new mobile phones like the Galaxy S8 and the Google Pixel have altered our shopping habits yet again thanks to something called USB-C. Because this new USB connection is game changer, we’re directed to look for and buy a new battery charger. Brands like ADATA, Moshi, and others, have stepped up to the plate and introduced new models. So without further adieu, let’s take a closer look at one such charger in this ADATA A10050QC Power Bank review.

Upon first glance, you may have said to yourself that this device actually looks kind of cool. This ADATA Power Bank comes in two eye-catching metallic colors, blue and titanium grey, both with a sandblasted finish. Now forget about the color and finish for a moment. What’s actually neat is the design. ADATA has taken their A10050 Power Bank design and made them ergonomic with the A10050QC. Now it’s designed to fit in the palm of your hand, with grooved sides for your fingers and thumb. Good luck dropping it.

No more cylinders. No more boxes. This ergonomic design is a welcome change to the market.

As you see in the images above, on one end are the listed specs. On the other, there’s the power button, LED indication, the input port, and the two output ports. It’s pretty straightforward.

Like many of the chargers on the market, you can simultaneously charge the Power Bank while charging two mobile devices. Just remember to have enough cables to go around.

At $40, the ADATA A10050QC Power Bank is the clear winner in its category by features and price. Want a second opinion? Fine, we’ll give you one.

We compared this ADATA Power Bank against similar products from myCharge and Patriot Memory. The closest myCharge gets to the A10050QC is with their RazorPlatinum. It provides an additional 3350 mAh hours of battery capacity, but at over twice the price.

The nearest Patriot gets gets to the ADATA is with their FUEL Active 9000. From the description, you can already guess it offers 1000 mAh less battery capacity. While it’s $5 lower in price over the ADATA, it lacks a USB-C port but adds a flashlight feature. Speaking of the flashlight feature, if it’s a must have, there’s an ADATA product for that, the P20000D Power Bank.

As you can see, from a feature and value perspective, the ADATA A10050QC Power Banks reigns supreme in 2017.

There’s one final thing. As I mentioned, this Power Bank comes in two colors: blue and titanium gray. I believe a third color, possibly a bolder color like red, would be a welcome addition in mid-2017 .

Review: Best Touchscreen Gloves — Moshi Digits

Today is the Vernal Equinox. For those of you who don’t know what this means, it’s the first day of Spring. If you live here in New England, you wouldn’t know it was Spring. You probably think it’s still Winter with all the snow around. With that said, when an opportunity came along to test what could be the best touchscreen gloves for cold weather, I replied “There’s such a thing?” The short answer is Yes, there is such a product. So without further delay, let’s take a closer look at one particular pair of touchscreen gloves in this Moshi Digits review.

Are Moshi Digits the Best Touchscreen Gloves available today?

Fall and Winter present challenges to a tech-mobile lifestyle. Most of us are addicted to texting, some more so than others. Even as the temperatures get colder, we continue to text, regardless of our surroundings.

Picture this scenario. You’re outdoors in Cold City, USA. I happen to live just outside of Boston. Feel free to insert your city: Chicago, Minneapolis, Missoula, etc.

You would prefer not to text in 20-degree weather, but you just received a text, and you’re compelled to respond. We already established the addiction.

You receive a text, remove your gloves, respond to the text, maybe send another or two, put the gloves back on, and repeat the cycle over and over again. At some point, this removing and putting back on your gloves gets tiresome. Maybe, you decide to keep them off altogether and brave the elements. Now you’re just asking for trouble, i.e. frostbite.

What if there was a smartphone/tablet touchscreen glove for the cold times of the year? It turns out there are, with many choices available. This is where Moshi Digits come into play.

Moshi Digits

Made by a collective of elves, dwarfs, and the last surviving descendants of the Salem witches, these gloves are woven from long-forgotten mystical fabrics enchanted with Pixie dust.

Some of you are shaking your heads wondering ‘What did he just say?’ You may have even said that thought out loud.

If you believe what I just wrote, just know that none of it is true. I mean, come on. Everyone knows that North America’s last community of elves and dwarfs died in the great San Francisco Fire of 1906. And there are no descendants of the witches of Salem, having been snuffed out since 1693.

Instead, Moshi Digits are dual-layered gloves. The polyester outer layer fingertips have conductive fiber with a micro fleece inner layer. To say these touchscreen gloves are soft and comfortable may be an understatement.

They also have this feature called GripTrak™. You see a pattern of dots and lines across the inside of the gloves. This feature adds a level of grip to prevent you from dropping your mobile device. Not all of us use shatterproof cases, so GripTrak™ comes in handy.

Two of us tested the Moshi Digits touchscreen gloves. We both found the gloves function as advertised. My niece enjoyed the gloves more than I, and she’s in a slightly colder environment. In her case, best use of the smartphone gloves is in the commute between college buildings.

My situation is a bit different. The accuracy of your texts with touchscreen gloves is dependent on how well you actually text. I say this because I don’t text very well. I’m a bit clumsy with the fingers. In my testing, the accuracy of the texts was no better with or without the gloves on. Either way, my texts survive with the use of the AutoCorrect feature.

Regardless, the gloves, and I do mean all ten fingers and thumbs, yield accurate results on the mobile screen. Some of us just need to focus more than others on what we’re actually typing.

I used the gloves while shoveling snow from the driveway and while driving. If you think the slip-free feature works well on a mobile phone, try it on a shovel handle or a steering wheel. It works too well.

A Few Drawbacks

While these gloves are manufactured for outdoor use, they aren’t meant for all day use, especially when it’s truly cold outside. In fact, I would limit wearing up to 30 minutes at any stretch when it’s below freezing temperature. Woven fabrics will keep your hands warm, but only for so long. The material is not ideal for blocking the wind, especially a cold wind. This is why I carry two pairs of gloves, one for texting and one for longer outdoor exposure.

As these gloves are fabric-woven, they aren’t water-resistant so don’t go making snowballs. I doubt you want to text with soak-and-wet gloves. On the flip-side, they are hand-washable. You can feel good about that.

Also, keep them away from Velcro, which is the enemy of fabric-woven products everywhere. A lot of Winter clothing have Velcro straps, so be mindful before making contact between the two materials. One material will fray the other.

Moshi Digits weigh in at 2.43 ounces and are available in two sizes/colors: dark gray (L/XL) and light gray (S/M).

Conclusion

In our testing, Moshi’s Digits performed quite well. They happened to be super-comfortable too. In fact, these gloves are quite comfortable even after many hours of continuous use. Just be mindful of the outdoor conditions especially when you plan to be out for a lengthy period. At $29.95, these touchscreen gloves are well-priced in the marketplace in addition to outperforming much of competition within its category.

Moto Z Droid Review – A Verizon Exclusive

Review: Moto Z Droid Smartphone

It feels like only yesterday when I purchased an unlocked Moto X Pure. Not even a year has passed from that date and we now see the latest offerings with the Moto Z moniker, this time from Lenovo. Within the Moto Z family, Verizon offers consumers the most choices: Moto Z Play Droid, Moto Z Droid, and Moto Z Force Droid. Lenovo didn’t stop there. They worked with third-party companies like Hasselblad and JBL to introduce complimentary products called Moto Mods. I had the pleasure of testing one such mod with a Moto Z Droid for a few weeks. How does the Moto Z Droid fare against its predecessor or the competition for that matter? Let’s find out in this Moto Z Droid review.

Moto Z Design and Features

As far as top-tier phones go, this model is very similar to those from Google, LG, and Samsung. All have top of the line specifications with regards to the screen, CPU, and GPU. When compared to its predecessor, the Moto X Pure, there are mostly design improvements, but a few back steps. The Moto Z is shorter in both height and width, and thinner in depth. The Moto Z is 0.91 mm thinner against the thinnest part of the Moto X Pure. If you recall, the latter has a curved back which consumers liked. The screen size has decreased from 5.7″ to 5.5″, which in my opinion is an improvement.

Moto Z Droid:

Among reviewers, there’s been much discussion about the placement of the Moto Z’s power and volume buttons. For you left-handed users, this won’t matter one bit, but for you right-handed users, this is where a dispute arises. First of all, the change in location is a plus from where it was on the Moto X Pure. Even though the size of the buttons has decreased, many right-handed users won’t like how their thumb rests on the volume up button. I would have preferred to have the power button up high, rather be in the third position. Anyhow, all of this discussion disappears when you use a case to protect your phone.

Most, if not all reviewers, failed to view this button placement in the following way. I use a Joby mobile phone holder (and flexible tripod) with my Moto X Pure. This allows me to take better pictures and video of Elmas the cat and my skateboarding. Because you want to balance your phone, you would place the Joby holder along the centerline of your phone. You see, on the Moto X Pure, the volume buttons are in the way, hence the problem. With the Moto Z, there’s no button interference; thus one of my biggest headaches disappears as the Joby correctly grabs the phone.

Concerning the design, the aluminum chassis is too slippery in my hands. The removable back panel adds some texture, but it isn’t enough. If you want to ensure the Moto Z stays in your hand, a protective case is a must.

More Design and Features

The display on the Moto Z is a thing of beauty. Why this AMOLED screen didn’t appear on the Moto X is a mystery, especially when it appeared on its predecessor. I, for one, am glad it’s back. Like it’s predecessor, the display contains Corning® Gorilla® Glass. The only thing missing from this Droid is Shattershield™. If you want this feature, you’ll have to pay more as it’s only available on the Moto Z Force Droid.

Just below the AMOLED display, you’ll notice the fingerprint reader.

In case you haven’t heard or noticed, the 3.5 mm headphone jack and µ USB port were replaced with one USB-C connection. While I applaud this decision, I believe this change is premature and shouldn’t have taken place until the 2017 flagship model is released. You see, there are no headphones with a USB-C connection available just yet. To get around this issue, the folks at Lenovo include a 3.5 mm to USB-C port adapter with the Moto Z. Lose that dongle and you’re screwed, that is unless you have Bluetooth headphones. Charging and data transfer are done with this connection too.

Speaking of charging, the battery size on the Moto Z is 2600 mAh. I believe this is one of those step backs I referred to earlier. If I were in the business of designing mobile phones, I wouldn’t have gone below 3000 mAh, which is what the Moto X Pure has.

If you desire more battery life, you have three options. You can upgrade to the Moto Z Force Droid which has a 3500 mAh battery, or you can purchase one of two mods: the Incipio offGRID™ power pack or the Mophie juice pack. These two mods will substantially provide extra battery life. They’ll also add weight and thickness to your device. The Incipio product has the added feature of being compatible with a wireless charging pad. It would have been nice for the Moto Z to charge wire free mod free. I believe this misstep should be corrected in the next design build.

Storage and memory have stepped up with the Moto Z. Like other flagship mobile phones, this one incorporates 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. With storage, the phone is starting with either 32 or 64 GB on board with support up to 2 TB. Unfortunately finding micro SD cards over 256 GB is a laborious task.

Built-In Camera

Now onto my favorite feature. So much has changed with the built-in camera that I’m not sure where to begin.

If you didn’t notice from the list above, the camera size has decreased to 13 MP but the aperture has increased to ƒ/1.8. The truth of the matter is this isn’t all bad news. How many of you were taking images at 21 MP with the Moto X Pure? I certainly wasn’t and part of my job description is to take photos for a living. The increased aperture on the rear camera is a plus, while the decreased aperture on the 5 MP front camera is barely noticeable.

If capturing 21 MP image is a must, then you’ll have to upgrade to the Moto Z Force Droid. It’s your only option.

With the Moto Z, we now get laser autofocus and optical image stabilization, both of which are increasingly appearing on all higher-end phones. Digital zoom has increased from 4X to 8X. Also standard is Google Photo integration. In my opinion, none of these is even the best feature. That’s reserved for ‘Professional mode.’

After activating the camera, in this case, the rear camera, touch the camera icon in the lower right corner of the screen. This action pulls up a menu consisting of the following: Photo, Video, Panorama, Slow motion, and Professional mode. The latter is most exciting. You can choose to take a photo right off the bat or you can open any of the five manual settings: Scene, White Balance, Timer, ISO (100-3200) and Exposure (-2 to +2). By adjusting any of the five settings, you can perfect your skills in the art of mobile photography.

On the main camera screen, there are icons for switching to the front camera, HDR (High Dynamic Range), Flash, and Timer. Swiping your finger to the left and right yield different results. When you initially swipe right, another menu appears. It’s in this menu where you can adjust such items as photo and video size, along with quick capture. Swiping left takes you to the images you just captured. No longer do you need to go into Photos (or Gallery) to see them. If you don’t like the picture the camera just captured, you can modify it or simply delete it. It’s a time saver for sure.

To take a screenshot, press and hold the power and volume down buttons for three seconds or until the camera shutter clicks, whichever come first. Sadly, I couldn’t get this to feature to function the way I believe it’s supposed to work. This a discussion I’ll need to have with my Verizon contact. I’ll update this post if the outcome changes.

Moto Mods

What makes the Moto Z family of phones stand out from its peers–a little something Moto Mods. Actually it’s a big deal. Roughly a year ago, LG introduced the G5, their flagship phone. After spending millions of dollars launching the product with commercials starring actor Jason Statham, sales have been a disaster. And the reviews weren’t much better. The biggest problem with LG’s design was that their phone was modular. Who wants to take apart a phone?

Lenovo took a different approach. They kept the phone intact, only allowing for the back shell to be removed. With this no-nonsense approach, Lenovo was able to reap those rewards that eluded LG. Lenovo has introduced a handful of mods, two of which have already been described above. The remaining ones are the JBL SoundBoost speaker, the Insta-Share projector, and the Hasselblad True Zoom camera. For the past few weeks, I had the pleasure of playing around with latter.

The Hasselblad True Zoom camera is quite the exciting product. With its 10x optical zoom, you’ll be able to take better, clearer photographs than before. After removing the back panel, the True Zoom mod magnetically snaps on and comes to life. With this mod, you’ll be to take photos at 12 MP and video in 1080P at 30fps.

Previously with the Moto X Pure, when you took a photo in HDR mode, you only received one JPEG image. Now, with the Hasselblad True Zoom camera mod on the Moto Z, you have the option to receive two images, JPEG and DNG, a RAW format. This added functionality comes in handy when you’re processing images in Adobe’s Photoshop.

The downside to having this mod is that it doubles the size and weight of the Moto Z. It’s a good thing that Lenovo provides a convenient carrying case for the Moto Z + True Zoom camera. It’s not only easy to carry around by hand, but it fits nicely into a back pocket or purse.

After spending $624 (or less) on the Moto Z Droid, purchasing the Hasselblad True Zoom camera mod for $299 (or less) is something you’ll have to ponder. My suggestion is to try out the camera mod at your local Verizon store, then decide.

Final Thoughts

Not only is the Moto Z Droid a worthy successor to the Moto X Pure, but it’s also a contender for your dollars against other top-tier mobile phones from the likes of Google, LG, and Samsung. Plus, no other brand has modular devices like Lenovo’s Moto Z.

While the Moto Z comes with some unnecessary bloatware, it’s easily removable. Oddly enough, the phone doesn’t come with Google Now Launcher pre-installed. Adding this should be one of the first things you do when you purchase the phone.

With CES2017 approaching, here’s hoping we see some new Moto Mods available in 2017.

Review: Libratone One Click Bluetooth Portable Speaker

Unless you’re a close follower of all things ‘Sound,’ you’ve probably never heard of Libratone before, and that’s a shame. As a company, Libratone is barely seven years old. But based on what they manufacture, they’re growing up quick, and about to enter adulthood. It’s been one heck of a busy year for this brand, introducing half of their current product line in the past six months. With the end of year approaching, they kept their right foot on the pedal and launched new products like the Q ADAPT in-ear and on-ear headphones. This brings us to the One Click Bluetooth portable speaker. So how does this product stack up? Let’s take a closer look in this Libratone One Click speaker review.

Pros:
• Beautiful, creative design
• Solid construction
• Powerful sound with exceptional bass
• Four attractive color options
• Great battery life ≥ 11 hours

Cons:
• Bass may be too strong for some folks
• While it’s splash proof, it’s not waterproof
• $200 price tag, may be too expensive for some

One Click Design and Features

If you couldn’t already discern, the Libratone One Click is one engaging speaker. First off the design.

It’s hard to decide what makes the Libratone One Click Bluetooth speaker stand out the most.

Is it the attractive color choices and fabric scheme?
Is it the solid construction and the rubberized metal bumper?
Or is the multi-functional touch interface with the birdie on it?

Even I can’t narrow it down to one.

As I just stated, the One Click is surrounded by a most durable rubberized metal bumper. While I don’t recommend testing its sturdiness for yourself, just know that it can handle a fall from your desk. It’s also splash proof with an IPX4 rating. Now be careful with this speaker around say a swimming pool. If you drop it in water, it’ll sink like a brick. It does not float.

Like most bumpers, it’s adjustable/removable. You can attach the enclosed short strap or U-shaped lock through the bumper. Both options are shown in photos below. So if you want to connect your One Click to a backpack or just hold it like a purse, you can easily do so.

The fabric on the front/back surfaces of the One Click is not only eye-catching, but it’s also durable. The speaker is available in four colors: Cloudy Grey, Graphite Grey, Cerise Red, Caribbean Green. How cool would it have been if Libratone called the last color Caribbean Queen in honor of singer Billy Ocean? Just a thought.

I suspect that in a majority of people’s opinions, the touch interface is the coolest design feature. Through this interface, you can adjust volume, start and stop operation, as well as take and end calls. Adjusting the volume is a matter of circling a finger around the interface whereupon you see the backlit indication.

On the rear of the speaker is the on/off button and splash protected area for the mini-HDMI and Aux ports. Charging the battery is handled via the aforementioned mini-HDMI jack. Should you want to listen to music or a podcast via a cabled connection, that’s what the Aux port is for.

I inquired about the TDH and wattage of the speaker, but the answer is more complex than I imagined. The word according to the Libratone’s Tech Department was “we do not provide THD and wattage specifications as these typically only express performance of single elements of the product, rather than the end result.” I can live with that response.

One thing I’d like to be able to do with the speaker is comfortably set it on its long edge. Although it’s possible, the speaker is not exactly stable.

The speaker has overall dimensions of 2.8″ x 6.6″ x 10.8″, and weighs in at 3.3 lbs.

As we often state here at Beantown, when reviewing speakers and headphones, the most important performance factor is the quality of sound. Using the playlist above, the OneClick was tested across a broad range of music. Songs within each album were sampled against comparable $200 speakers selected from my collection. The results were noted, and quite kind to the reviewed speaker.

Last week in a review of the HK One, I described that speaker in the following way, “It’s a sad moment when the only positive thing you can write about a product, in this case, a speaker, is its ability to deliver strong vocals.” I’m so glad I can’t make that statement two weeks in a row. You see, the One Click produced excellent vocals, which were warm and inviting. The One Click didn’t stop there. The speaker took a balanced approach with sound quality. For a speaker of its size, bass reproduction was excellent. In fact, it was too good thanks to its 3″ woofer. In my opinion, the bass sounds could have been dialed down a notch along with the vocals being dialed up one. I’m not complaining; it’s just personal preference.

Like the HK One, I tested the Libratone One Click against ten albums. When I say I haven’t heard better playback of John Coltrane, Rush, and 30 Seconds to Mars from a $200 portable speaker, it’s not an understatement. Say what you want about actor/musician Jared Leto and his band 30 Seconds to Mars, but the Libratone One Click just played that album perfectly. It’s like the speaker was engineered for their sound. And I can’t wait until I listen to John Coltrane’s The Ultimate Blue Train again.

When the One Click was compared song-to-song against the HK One, the former delivered superior sound quality across all the sampled artists. Lana Del Rey’s vocal reproduction on Paradise was impressive. The same was said of the other female artists: Lady Gaga, Ellie Goulding, and Emeli Sandé.

The one negative takeaway from this Libratone speaker was that on Emeli Sandé’s song Wonder, I could barely hear the finger snapping which I know is in the song. If I weren’t familiar with the song, I wouldn’t have noticed that particular sound was missing.

I stood in different spots in my 300 ft² entertainment room, as well as adjacent rooms, and the sound quality did not disappoint. Then I placed the one Click around the room. What I heard out of the 1″ tweeter, 3″ woofer, and dual passive drivers was terrific. Thanks to the upfiring tweeter, you get what Libratone refers to as 360° FullRoom™ sound. I highly suggest placing the portable speaker (in a more central location) on a coffee book table should you have one.

The One Click’s sound quality was matched with excellent battery life. While I’m not certain of its lithium-ion battery size, although I suspect it’s around 5000 mAh, its life approached 12 hours. As a consumer, this is what you want from a $200 portable speaker. One night while testing, I had the speaker volume near its maximum for four straight hours and there was no drop off in sound output. What more can I say?

Libratone App

While the speaker has received a 5 out 5 rating in Amazon reviews, the same cannot be said for the app. Reviews posted on the Google Play Store give it a rating of 2.9. Feel free to read them to get a better understanding. I too have had issues using the app, in particular two dropped calls in one night over Bluetooth, but none since that date. I can’t explain why it happened, it just did.

Since that time, I’ve had zero problems with updating the password, connecting via bluetooth, visiting internet stations such as BBC 6 Radio, or adjusting SoundSpaces. You can view the battery charge remaining and adjust volume via the app. Sadly, I couldn’t attempt pairing two Libratone speakers as I only have one available.

Final Thoughts

Our results surpassed our expectations on the One Click portable speaker. It was a clear winner in features and performance over compared speakers such as the HK One. As I’ve stated, the Libratone One Click is not only a wonderful speaker with a range of attractive color options; it’s a true performer.

It takes up only a small footprint on a flat surface while delivering solid sound quality and battery life all at a reasonable price point.

With CES2017 approaching, here’s hoping we see some new products available in 2017.

Normally, the Libratone One Click speaker can be purchased directly from the Libratone website for $199.99. Fortunately for you, it’s $50 less right now through January 30th. At $149.99, this speaker is worth taking a long look at.

Manfrotto Expands Their Product Line for Fall 2016 with the Windsor Camera Bag Collection

For you bag, attaché, and backpacks lovers, just when you thought there would be nothing new-and-interesting between Back to School season and CES2017 comes this beautiful product line–the Windsor Collection from Manfrotto. Many of you mobile-phone-picture-takers may have never heard of Manfrotto, but we slightly older camera users certainly have. For you younger generation millennials, I highly suggest you get to know the brand. Before you know it, you’ll probably own one of their tripods, just like we at Beantown do, and maybe one of their camera bags too. If you’re fortunate enough, you just might get your hands on the Manfrotto Windsor Camera Bag Collection at the upcoming PhotoPlus or NAB NY expositions.

Manfrotto Windsor Camera Bag Collection

Two days ago, the folks at Manfrotto unexpectedly caused my eyes to light up. You see, over the summer, I previewed a handful of Back to School, business and urban professional, and business travel bag collections from the likes of Case Logic, Speck, and Targus. I’ve added links below. All were beautiful, practical, and well-designed. And I’ve put many of them to good use. Unfortunately, I’ve gone months without seeing anything new in the camera bag aisle until now.

The Manfrotto Windsor Collection takes the standard boring and drab camera bag and tosses it out the window. As Manfrotto puts it, they’re “paying homage to vintage British style.” The top portions of each bag and backpack are made of a light gray synthetic fabric, with the sides and bottom made of nylon in a darker gray. If this isn’t attractive enough for you, open the genuine brown leather straps, and a tartan-patterned lining is revealed. For those of you who not only care about the quality but the look of your bag, this collection says ‘Class.’

While each bag and backpack have something different to offer its user, they have much in common. All four products in the Windsor Collection have a water-repellent coating applied to them. While they are water repellent, I would suggest not getting them too wet as they are not waterproof.

The bags and backpack also have flexible, interchangeable dividers and incorporate the shock-absorbing Manfrotto Protection System. You can customize the placement of your lenses and gear while also having the ability to fold or pull out the dividers when needed. In addition to the modular design, the three messenger/reporter bags have a trolley strap to fit over a luggage handle. With the exception of the Messenger S bag which has a tablet compartment, each Windsor camera bag or backpack also holds up to a 13.3 or 15″ laptop.

The backpack and reporter bag have two additional features beyond that of the messenger bags. 1) There’s an external tripod connection, so there’s no need for your tripod ever to be placed into the bag. 2) There’s a side pocket or water bottle holder. Why there’s no water bottle pocket on the messenger bags is a mystery. I suspect there was a design issue as the placement of the side pocket was too close to that of the shoulder strap connections.
