Fargo Season 3 DVD Review

03/15/2018 By Hakan Can

Fargo Season 3 DVD review

FX Networks, Fargo Season 3 aired from April – June 2017 with ten episodes depicting yet another version of the crime instilled, snow-ridden plains and thick northern accents that leave you wondering why on Earth anyone would live in such a place, right? So let’s jump right into this Fargo Season 3 DVD review.

Fargo Season 3 DVD review

Fargo Season 3 DVD Review

Rest assured and not depicted by “true events,” is any of this series accurate, but possibly geared to those who have never ventured to the north, felt the sweltering heat of the summer months, or can honestly say the “accent” even makes our heads spin.

That said and set aside, the series stars Ewan McGregor in a fantastic, dual role as sibling rivals, Ray and Emmet Stussy, David Thewlis as a dangerous business tycoon named V.M. Varga, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Nikki Swango, Ray Stussy’s sexy, parolee girlfriend and Carrie Coon as Gloria Burgle, Chief/Deputy Sheriff of the town Eden Valley.

Fargo Season 3 DVD review

McGregor, Thewlis, and Winstead all had outstanding performances during the entire series which made it even tolerable to watch. Additionally, their costumes, hair, and makeup brought their characters to life and created an intensity and believability to the show’s audience. Mary Elizabeth Winstead who played Nikki Swango gave a less than subpar run and made it difficult to listen to, much less watch.

The story starts with Ray Stussy wanting to borrow money from his wealthier brother Emmet so he can purchase a ring for Nikki. Ray is Nikki’s parole officer. After Emmet declines to borrow Ray the money, Ray becomes upset and brings up a long-standing debate over their father’s inheritance. Ray disputes he was unfairly compensated with a Corvette rather than a very valuable stamp, currently in Emmet’s possession. Ray wants what he feels is rightfully his and blackmails one of his other parolees, Maurice, to break into Emmet’s home and take the stamp.

Along the way, Maurice forgets part of Emmet’s name as well as his address and ends up at Ennis Stussy’s house instead of in a nearing town. Maurice kills Ennis, ransacks the house, and does not locate the stamp due to the location mix up. Gloria Burgle arrives back home with her son to find her stepfather, Ennis Stussy, murdered in the house.

Fargo Season 3 DVD review

Read:   Blu-ray/DVD: HBO's The Deuce Season 1 Review

Emmet is in trouble as he attempts to pay back a loan from a shady businessman, V.M Varga but little does he know what he signed up for was much more than a loan but a partnership with a corporation owned by Varga. Varga is not the negotiating type to allow Emmet to pay him off and exit the agreement. Meanwhile, Maurice seeks revenge on Ray over the murder that took place. Maurice attempts to blackmail him, which backfires when Ray and Nikki kill Maurice by pushing an air conditioner out the window on top of Maurice.

From there on and the rest of the season we see an influx of unfortunate events including more crazy murders, scandals and unanswered questions regarding random events. There are so many characters that appear out of nowhere, for a short period even and then leave without knowing their true place within the story.

Gloria spends the remainder of the series trying to solve Ennis’s murder, that she will untimely never uncover, due to a series of events that led nowhere.

Fargo Season 3 DVD review

Emmet wants a continued relationship with his brother but is also in the midst of a major tax and business situation created by Varga and his shady crew which ultimately leaves his business partner in a life and death predicament and in the end things for Emmet don’t turn out as one would have previously thought.

Ray and Nikki continue to run into streaks of bad luck, and that is putting it mildly. They cannot catch a break and find themselves in the untimeliest of situations.

The series’ best episodes were the last three, and the first seven could have been cut and summed up in one. I wasn’t much of a fan, but many are sure to feel quite the opposite. If the slightest bit of curiosity is getting to you, please do watch it because you may have a different outlook on it than I did.

Blu-ray/DVD: Murder on the Orient Express Review

03/01/2018 By Hakan Can

Murder on the Orient Express Blu-ray Review

Set in 1934, the movie begins at The Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, and the first we see of Inspector Hercule Poirot is the back of his head. Moments later, in front of this very same wall comes the public trial of a rabbi, a priest, and an imam over a missing priceless relic. It’s your classic ‘Who done it’ mystery. Due to his incredible detective skills, he quickly solves the mystery and soon after, heads to Istanbul by boat. Oddly enough, none of what takes place in the first 10 minutes has any bearing on the film’s storyline. Let’s dive into the Murder on the Orient Express Blu-ray review.

Murder on the Orient Express Blu-ray Review

Once in Istanbul, Poirot runs into the Monsieur Bouc who is the Director of the Orient Express. Not even two minutes later, a gentleman from the British Consul’s office comes looking for Poirot. As quickly as it started, the detective’s holiday comes to an end when he’s informed he must head to England on a case. Now he must hitch a ride on the Orient Express.

At the train station, we’re introduced to the cast as they all board the train en route to Paris. Standing out in the cast of character is none other than Michelle Phieffer and Johnny Depp. They have an interesting once in the sleeping car.

Once all are situated, Depp’s character, an amateur art dealer/mobster named Ratchett, asks Poirot for protection. The mobster is correct in the belief that someone is out to kill him. Poirot declines the generous offer as he’s not impressed with Ratchett’s face. After all, what self-respectable individual would accept to protect a mobster?

Murder on the Orient Express Blu-ray Review

Johnny Depp stars in Twentieth Century Fox’s “Murder on the Orient Express.”

Although the mystery is in effect, it takes 40 minutes for the murder of Ratchett to occur. It’s time for the world’s greatest detective to clock in. Alone and in pairs, all the guests in first class are interviewed by the Poirot. With some terrific storytelling and acting by much (but not all) of the cast, the mystery is solved.

For obvious reasons, I can’t get into further detail on this detective/murder mystery. It wouldn’t be fair to you readers who want to watch the film, and watch you should. What I can say is that much of what takes place has to do with the kidnapping and death of Col. Armstrong’s daughter. If you’re familiar with the novel, you’ll notice the film deviates a bit from Agatha Christie’s story. This helps keep the narrative interesting.

Available February 27th on store shelves and online everywhere comes Murder on the Orient Express on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™, and DVD, all with a digital copy from Fox Home Entertainment. You can also order the film in standard or high definition at any of these digital stores: Apple’s iTunes Store, Google’s Play Store, Vudu, and Amazon.

Press Release

Per the Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment press release: “Everyone has a past. Everyone has a secret. Everyone is a suspect. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment presents the ultimate case of whodunit when MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS arrives on Digital February 20 and on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™, and DVD February 27.”

“Kenneth Branagh directs and leads an all-star cast, including Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench and Leslie Odom, Jr., in this stylish, suspenseful and thrilling mystery based on the best selling novel by Agatha Christie. Everyone’s a suspect when a murder is committed on a lavish train ride, and a brilliant detective must race against time to solve the puzzle before the killer strikes again.”

“MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS is loaded with bonus material that dives into the making of the film including an eight-part documentary, eleven deleted scenes, commentary by Branagh and much more.”

Video Rating – 4.5 out of 5

Filmed in 65mm, the amount of detail in the scenes whether they be outdoors in Malta (Jerusalem in the film), in the grand sets, or within the train cabins themselves, make the environments more impressive. The scene where the Orient Express departs the train station is filmed beautifully. Once you learn that this was a large-scale set with a full-sized replica train and not an actual station blows you more away.

Although there’s a fair amount of CGI in the film, it’s not as much as you may think. And it doesn’t drown out any of the sets. It’s used only when and where it needs to be.

The use of color and contrast is used well throughout the film and adds another layer to already magnificent scenery.

Sound Rating – 4.5 out of 5

If you’re about to watch this film in 4K UltraHD™, then you’re in for a treat. That is provided you have the proper receiver and accompanying speakers. Audio is presented in English Dolby Atmos, as well as English Descriptive Audio Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish DD 5.1, and French DD 5.1.

Buyers of the Blu-ray™ format can rejoice with English DTS-HD-Master Audio 7.1, English Descriptive Audio 5.1, Spanish DD 5.1, and French DD 5.1.

Get ready to hear the sounds of the Orient Express as it travels from Istanbul through Eastern Europe. I was much impressed with the soundtrack which set the viewer’s mood well throughout the film.  The sound never felt overpowering the dialogue.

Extras Rating – 5 out of 5

The 4K UltraHD™ and Blu-ray™ disks come with nearly ten extra features which span nearly 75 minutes. The DVD is limited to but a handful of extras. I highly recommend you watch them all as they offer a better understanding of what it takes to make such a film.

Many of today’s youth and 20-somethings aren’t familiar with the English writer Agatha Christie. I know this firsthand. This is especially sad as she’s considered by many as the 20th Century’s greatest novelist. After watching all 19 minutes of the feature Agatha Christie: An Intimate Portrait, you’ll get a better understanding of who she was. We see and hear this through her audio recordings, as well as interviews with her family, writers, and researchers.

Let’s Talk About Hercule Poirot gets into the details on the world’s greatest detective. We hear from Kenneth Branagh and Screenwriter Michael Green on what it takes to create the Belgian Inspector. It’s worth watching.

Gallery is a collection of images taken from the numerous sets. Many are shown as the cast and crew saw them–without the special effects. Of all the features, it’s among my top three favorites.

The Art of Murder and All Aboard: Filming Murder on the Orient Express are my other two favorite features. So much is covered over 33 minutes that it’ll blow your mind in what it takes to make such a film. In The Art of Murder, we see firsthand what it takes to film in a confined space that is a train car. We’re shown the building of the massive sets, the replica train cars, locomotive, and more. We also see and hear from Costume Designer Alexandra Byrne and her team on putting together the incredible 1930s wardrobe.

All Aboard: Filming Murder on the Orient Express continues where the previous feature left off. We see and hear about the difficulties and challenges it took to film in 65mm. The crew discuss how the massive sets were made. One, in particular, was how the outdoor scenery was shot and displayed. As the train rides along the track, there’s plenty of scenery through its windows. This scenery was filmed in New Zealand, then stitched together, and then played back on over 3K LED displays to the left and right of the train cars. Rather than seeing a green screen, the actors saw actual scenery, which in turn makes their performance a bit easier. The technical aspects of making this film are most impressive.

Music of Murder is a 7-minute discussion by Composer Patrick Doyle regarding the film’s score. You get to see and hear how all the string instruments and french horns were used to set the various moods throughout the movie.

Murder on the Orient Express Blu-ray Review

Michelle Pfeiffer stars in Twentieth Century Fox’s “Murder on the Orient Express.”

After having grossed $350M worldwide, it is rumored, and probably correctly so, that Kenneth Branagh will reprise his role of Hercule Poirot in Death on the Nile. It should be out in the fall of 2019. I look so forward to seeing that mustache again.

War for the Planet of the Apes 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review

War for the Planet of the Apes 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review

War for the Planet of the Apes is the third installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot series, beginning with the events in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and continuing in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. War for the Planet of the Apes tells the story of Caesar as the reluctant leader of the simians, who is masterfully played by Andy Serkis.

War for the Planet of the Apes 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review

The movie begins with a group of soldiers tracking the location of the apes command base in the forest. Once they open fire, the apes retaliate and end up capturing a few of the soldiers. Tired from all the bloodshed, Caesar spares their lives to send a message to the Colonel (Woody Harrelson), that the apes were not their enemy. It’s a decision that Caesar ultimately ends up regretting as it results in a tragic incident that sets the tone for the rest of the movie. Director Matt Reeves does an excellent job developing the character arc of the protagonist Caesar throughout the movie, providing the perfect balance between Caesar’s struggle with his humanity against his primitive instincts.

Video Rating – 4 out of 5

Even though War for the Planet of the Apes is not filmed in true 4K and is a 2160P transfer, the amount of detail in the scenes with a natural environment are impressive. The opening scene which was filmed in Muir Woods is absolutely breathtaking as it creates a vivid and immersive environment for the viewer. The detail of the apes is equally impressive, as I could distinguish many of the features on Caesar’s face. However at times because of the precision of the detail, I found myself getting distracted by the artificialness some of the CGI created such as when the apes are riding the horses and the avalanche scene near the end. The green/blue hues of this movie seen slightly overexposed since at times during the movie Caesar appeared to have bluish/tealish fur.

Sound Rating – 5 out of 5

The sound is presented in Dolby Atmos/Dolby True HD 7.1 and right from the start, the movie takes full advantage of its Atmos channels in the very first battle scene between the humans and the apes. The gunshots, arrows, and explosions all hit satisfying notes and continue over the course of the movie. I was also impressed as the soundtrack had a perfect balance throughout the movie, having witnessed movies where the effects and sound end up overpowering the dialogue. The producers did an excellent job with this track.

Extras Rating – 5 out of 5

If you’ve watched the film in 4K Ultra HD, then you’ve already noticed that there’s only extra–the commentary from Director Matt Reeves. Now it’s time to insert the Blu-ray disk into your player for the nearly 90 minutes of features, 23 minutes of deleted scenes, three concept art galleries, and yes, audio commentary from the director.

Concept Art Gallery is broken down into three categories: Characters, Drawings, and Paintings. The first two are very short, taking no more than two minutes of your time. Paintings, of which there are over 50, is a must viewing. It’s the kind of thing you stare at for however long you like, even wishing you owned a handful of the pieces by the time it’s over. The artwork is terrific.

Andy Serkis on the set of Twentieth Century Fox’s “War for the Planet of the Apes.”

The Blu-ray disk comes with six extra features which span nearly 90 minutes. They are the following:

  • Waging War for the Planet of the Apes – In-depth documentary on the making of the film (29.38)
  • All About Caesar (12:40)
  • WETA: Pushing Boundaries (10.36)
  • Music for Apes (6.20)
  • Apes: The Meaning of it All (20:15)
  • The Apes Saga: An Homage (7:48)

I tend not to watch the features, only the deleted scenes of most films. After watching the former today, I have to say that if you’re a fan of Planet of the Apes Universe, I implore that you watch these.

War for the Planet of the Apes 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review

Steve Zahn stars as Bad Ape in Twentieth Century Fox’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” also starring Andy Serkis and Woody Harrelson.

All About Caesar covers the progression of the main character of the trilogy of films. WETA: Pushing Boundaries covers the technical aspects of this film’s making. You get to see how the human actors are transformed into the digital ape counterparts over the span of three films.

Music for Apes is a 6-minute discussion by Director Matt Reeves and Composer Michael Giacchino regarding the film’s score. You get to see and hear from Emil Richards, a percussionist from not only of this film but on the 1968 Charlton Heston original.

Throughout all six features, you see so much of the five original films and the current trilogy.

War for the Planet of the Apes 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review

Also included with the Blu-ray disk are 10 Deleted Scenes which span 23 minutes. Watch them with or without the director’s commentary. They are the following:

  • Graveyard
  • Turncoats
  • Barrier Wall
  • “I Owe You One”
  • “A Great Man”
  • “Do Not Lose Hope”
  • Snowfall
  • The Colonel’s Speech (3:40)
  • Malcolm and the Dinosaurs (7:37)
  • “I Am Like Koba” (6.20)

If you’re only going to watch a few of these, I recommend you watch the last three with and without the audio commentary. The first nine deleted scenes are unfinished scenes. While they’re fully shot, the actors are seen in their suits, not as apes. The last deleted scene “I Am Like Koba” is a completed scene and must watch. I wish it remained in the film. It had to be a last minute deletion.

Malcolm and the Dinosaurs is a great scene between the Colonel and Caesar. There’s this terrific line where the Colonel says “You Apes, so strong. I wonder what kind of world would you build on our graves.” There’s even a mention as to the fate of Malcolm from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Here’s another one where I wish more of this scene appeared in the film.
