“Set along the North California coastline, Adelaide Wilson (Nyong’o) reluctantly returns to her beachside childhood home with her family and finds that she is haunted by unresolved trauma from her past along with a string of eerie coincidences. As darkness falls after a tense day at the beach, the Wilsons discover four figures standing in their driveway. They soon realize this is only the beginning of their troubles as they find that the four figures are terrifying and uncanny opponents: doppelgängers of themselves.”

“Featuring incredible must-see performances from Academy Award® winner Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther, 12 Years a Slave), Winston Duke (Black Panther), Emmy® winner Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Mad Men”) and Tim Heidecker (The Comedy, “Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories”), US is “the most out-of-the-box horror film of the past decade,” (Nathaniel Brail, Heroic Hollywood). Movie enthusiasts and horror fans alike can watch US again and again to unravel its darkest secrets. RWBY Volume 5 Blu-ray Review

06/01/2018 By Hakan Can

RWBY Volume 5 Blu-ray Review

This is going to come as a shock to all you RWBY fans out there, but up until a couple of weeks ago, I had never heard of this anime before. Seriously, I’ve been a fan of anime since the time of Star Blazers, yet somehow this one passed me by. After five seasons have come and gone, I’m finally on the RWBY bandwagon. Rather than talking any further, let’s right dive into the RWBY Volume 5 Blu-ray review.

RWBY Volume 5 Blu-ray Review

Available on June 5th comes RWBY Volume 5 in DVD and Blu-ray formats. The version we received is the Special Edition Combo Product which comes with two Blu-ray disks and a 32-page RWBY official manga anthology sampler. Disc 1 contains the 14 episodes, and Disc 2 includes all the extras.

RWBY Volume 5 Blu-ray Review
RWBY Volume 5 Blu-ray Review

Season 5 starts off with Qrow Branwen, Ruby Rose, and three other huntsmen and huntress candidates entering the city of Mistral for the first time. They’re in awe of what they see. Soon after, they settle in at the academy.

We meet a kid named Oscar who has reincarnated soul of Professor Ospin within him. And there’s Adam, the leader of a faunas splinter group, who has his eyes on becoming the head of White Fang.

Each of the four main characters is separated from one another, doing their own thing.

Weiss Schnee is flying home when her aircraft is shot down by what appears to be overgrown bees. The actions scenes here are spectacular. Unfortunately for her, the craft is shot down at which point she’s captured by bandits who are loyal to Raven Branwen.

Read:   Blu-ray/DVD: HBO's The Deuce Season 1 Review

Yang Xiao Long also encounters a bandit at a gas station, and a fight ensues. It’s safe to say Yang kicks some serious butt here. Another terrific action scene with velocity ramps in the fighting for added effect. That metal arm of hers sure packs a punch.

By the time Episode 4 comes to pass, we see Yang at the bandit camp where Weiss is held captive. Like clockwork, Yang kicks even more butt. I think it’s safe to say that she’s my favorite of the four main characters.

On Menagerie Island, home to hundreds of faunas, the Belladonna family including Blake learn of Adam taking over the White Fang. They learn of a plot to destroy the huntsmen and huntress academy in two months time. An attempt to recruit as many faunas as possible and protect the academy is made but falls on deaf ears. Blake and Sun can’t find anyone for their endeavor.

Come Episode 9, Raven makes a pact with Cinder and a few others who represent Salem, the evil witch-like character we saw back in Episode 2. Raven is after the Relic of Knowledge in addition to wanting her brother Qrow dead. Neither side appears to trust one another, so it’s a pact made of convenience, not trust.

RWBY Volume 5 Blu-ray Review
RWBY Volume 5 Blu-ray Review

In Episode 10, Professor Ospin comes clean to Ruby Rose as to the grand events that have and are currently taking place. The ‘Big Picture’ is revealed. We also see White Fang make an assassination attempt on the Belladonna family. The fighting scene in the burning palace is intense, especially between Sun and Ilia. Hats off to all the animators.

After this attack, Blake is able to recruit dozens of faunas to help protect Haven. Her father couldn’t be more proud.

In the final four episodes, the attack on the huntsmen/huntress academy is in full swing. It’s good guys and gals versus the bad with more terrific action taking place. Weiss gets speared, nearly fatally had it not been for one of the huntsmen recruits. His power finally manifests itself and Weiss is healed in the process.

The double cross I foresaw many episodes earlier between Raven and Vernal versus Cinder takes place in the vault below Haven. The fighting is epic! Simultaneously outside of the academy, Adam and White Fang have set up explosives to destroy Haven. The faunas arrive, defuse the situation, and surround White Fang until they’re defeated and surrender. Adam does not give up so quietly, then eventually escapes when no one was looking.

Yang and her mother Raven duke it out. Yang prevails and retrieves the Relic of Knowledge.

Blake, Ruby, Weiss, and Yang are finally reunited. Salem appears in an illusion setting up the events to take place in RWBY Volume 6.

I did my best to refrain offering up any spoilers.

Final Thoughts

The thing I like most about RWBY Volume 5 is the good qualities exhibited by the main characters. They have integrity and are loyal to each other. Many life lessons can be learned from them.

I wasn’t crazy about some of the character animation. You can barely see their noses. From my viewing experience, the dialogue and pacing are often a bit slow. The plot could have moved quicker.

On the flip side, the majority of the animation is terrific with some fantastic fight scenes. There’s proper character development an overall excellent storyline. Audio and visual effects hit their marks as well.

Blu-ray/DVD: Den of Thieves Review

04/24/2018 By Hakan Can

Den of Thieves Blu-ray Review

Set in current day Los Angeles, the movie is about the crossing of two groups of crooked and shady individuals. One on hand, there’s the Regulators, the Major Crimes unit of the LA Sheriff’s Department led by Big Nick O’Brien played by Gerard Butler. On the other, there’s the Outlaws, the premier group of bank robbers in LA County. Ray Merrimen played by Pablo Schreiber leads them. This film has a lot going on so let’s dive into the Den of Thieves Blu-ray review.

Den of Thieves Blu-ray Review

Den of Thieves is not your classic Cops vs. Robbers story. It’s more like what’s the other group up to and how do we counter it.

In fact, in this 2 hours, 29 minutes unrated version of the film, the lines between the two groups are often blurred. So much so that you often feel sympathetic for a few of the Outlaws, and feel some hostility towards the Regulators.

The film begins with Big Nick O’Brien staying out all night showing up at what appears to be his home at sunrise. He sneaks in and is surprised by his wife. Nick has been a bad boy. He’s been cheating on his wife and is about to get caught. What takes place is tragic from a family perspective, but Nick has no one to blame but himself for being a lousy husband. His character is off to a bad start, and this carries throughout the film. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of you come to loathe him.

Den of Thieves Blu-ray Review

Gerard Butler and Maurice Compte star in Den of Thieves

When it comes to the other members of the Regulators, you begin to dislike them as well.

There’s a scene which takes place in a hotel suite where the Sheriffs essentially kidnapped Donnie (the driver) for an off-the-books interrogation. There’s plenty of booze, prostitutes, and foul language. If there was ever any doubt that the Regulators were shady and crooked, it’s now out the door. I actually feel sad for Donnie here.

In the Outlaws opening scene, they steal an armored money car in front of a donut shop in a heist that went far too south. Four people were killed, including a few cops. While they never intended to kill anyone in this robbery, and haven’t in the past, they did this time, albeit inadvertently at first, and now they’re the top targets of the police and FBI, and rightfully so.

Our bank robbers, the Merrimen crew, are as bad as the Regulators times 10. Still, there are moments throughout the film where you feel sympathy for them. Big Nick is continually harassing their driver Donnie and their leader Merrimen.

There’s a scene with Enson (50 Cent) where he’s making breakfast for his family and tells his daughter how much he loves her. He even scares her prom date with some tough love. You don’t feel the bad guy in him here.

Den of Thieves Blu-ray Review

Pablo Schreiber, Curtis Jackson, Evan Jones and O’Shea Jackson star in Den of Thieves

Plenty more takes place in the remaining two hours of this crime saga. For obvious reasons, I can’t get into further detail as I don’t want to ruin what takes place. It wouldn’t be fair to you who want to watch the film and watch you should. You’ll probably want to watch it a second time later in the same week.

Available April 24th on store shelves and online everywhere comes Den of Thieves on Blu-ray™ + DVD + Digital copy from STX Films and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Press Release

Per the STX Films and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment press release: “Den of Thieves is a gritty Los Angeles crime saga which follows the intersecting and often personally connected lives of an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff’s Department and the state’s most successful bank robbery crew as they plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank of Downtown Los Angeles. Filled with gripping, explosive action and an ending that left audiences stunned, Den of Thieves is an electrifying game of cat-and-mouse.”

“Directed by Christian Gudegast (London Has Fallen), the film blurs the lines between good and evil by examining the rivalry between a police unit, led by Gerard Butler (London Has Fallen), and a crew of career criminals featuring Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (Get Rich or Die Trying), Pablo Schreiber (13 Hours), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton) and Evan Jones (A Million Ways to Die in the West).”

Den of Thieves is loaded with bonus material that dives into the making of the film including outtakes and deleted scenes, commentary by Director Christian Gudegast and Producer Tucker Tooley, and much more.

Video Rating – 4 out of 5

The scenes in the film are well framed, but I’m not a fan of the light filtering that took place. The washing out of colors didn’t impress me either. But then again, the director and colorists aren’t going for a Dick Tracy approach to filmmaking here. If the use of colors were too powerful, it might cut into the grit of the scenes and character.

The action scenes are intense from a visual perspective, more on the sound below.

Sound Rating – 4.75 out of 5

Because of its intense action sequences, sound plays an enormous part of Den of Thieves. Without the proper sound, the viewer wouldn’t be pulled in and immersed in the action that takes place in front of them.

In the Alameda Corridor scene, the sound is elevated to the point where you feel like you’re there. Hundreds of rounds are fired, and you notice them. To get a better understanding of how this scene was filmed, watch the short Bonus Feature.

The dialogue was easy to pick up and never overpowered by the action. It needed to be with everything else taking place.

Extras Rating – 3 out of 5

The Blu-ray™ + DVD disks come with over 30 minutes of extras. I recommend you watch the outtakes and deleted scenes, but not immediately after watching the 2 hours, 29 minutes film.

I wasn’t too impressed with the three bonus features: Alpha Males, Into the Den, and Alameda Corridor. They’re each under three minutes long and could have been combined into one lengthier feature.

Blu-ray/DVD: Murder on the Orient Express Review

03/01/2018 By Hakan Can

Murder on the Orient Express Blu-ray Review

Set in 1934, the movie begins at The Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, and the first we see of Inspector Hercule Poirot is the back of his head. Moments later, in front of this very same wall comes the public trial of a rabbi, a priest, and an imam over a missing priceless relic. It’s your classic ‘Who done it’ mystery. Due to his incredible detective skills, he quickly solves the mystery and soon after, heads to Istanbul by boat. Oddly enough, none of what takes place in the first 10 minutes has any bearing on the film’s storyline. Let’s dive into the Murder on the Orient Express Blu-ray review.

Murder on the Orient Express Blu-ray Review

Once in Istanbul, Poirot runs into the Monsieur Bouc who is the Director of the Orient Express. Not even two minutes later, a gentleman from the British Consul’s office comes looking for Poirot. As quickly as it started, the detective’s holiday comes to an end when he’s informed he must head to England on a case. Now he must hitch a ride on the Orient Express.

At the train station, we’re introduced to the cast as they all board the train en route to Paris. Standing out in the cast of character is none other than Michelle Phieffer and Johnny Depp. They have an interesting once in the sleeping car.

Once all are situated, Depp’s character, an amateur art dealer/mobster named Ratchett, asks Poirot for protection. The mobster is correct in the belief that someone is out to kill him. Poirot declines the generous offer as he’s not impressed with Ratchett’s face. After all, what self-respectable individual would accept to protect a mobster?

Murder on the Orient Express Blu-ray Review

Johnny Depp stars in Twentieth Century Fox’s “Murder on the Orient Express.”

Although the mystery is in effect, it takes 40 minutes for the murder of Ratchett to occur. It’s time for the world’s greatest detective to clock in. Alone and in pairs, all the guests in first class are interviewed by the Poirot. With some terrific storytelling and acting by much (but not all) of the cast, the mystery is solved.

For obvious reasons, I can’t get into further detail on this detective/murder mystery. It wouldn’t be fair to you readers who want to watch the film, and watch you should. What I can say is that much of what takes place has to do with the kidnapping and death of Col. Armstrong’s daughter. If you’re familiar with the novel, you’ll notice the film deviates a bit from Agatha Christie’s story. This helps keep the narrative interesting.

Available February 27th on store shelves and online everywhere comes Murder on the Orient Express on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™, and DVD, all with a digital copy from Fox Home Entertainment. You can also order the film in standard or high definition at any of these digital stores: Apple’s iTunes Store, Google’s Play Store, Vudu, and Amazon.

Press Release

Per the Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment press release: “Everyone has a past. Everyone has a secret. Everyone is a suspect. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment presents the ultimate case of whodunit when MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS arrives on Digital February 20 and on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™, and DVD February 27.”

“Kenneth Branagh directs and leads an all-star cast, including Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench and Leslie Odom, Jr., in this stylish, suspenseful and thrilling mystery based on the best selling novel by Agatha Christie. Everyone’s a suspect when a murder is committed on a lavish train ride, and a brilliant detective must race against time to solve the puzzle before the killer strikes again.”

“MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS is loaded with bonus material that dives into the making of the film including an eight-part documentary, eleven deleted scenes, commentary by Branagh and much more.”

Video Rating – 4.5 out of 5

Filmed in 65mm, the amount of detail in the scenes whether they be outdoors in Malta (Jerusalem in the film), in the grand sets, or within the train cabins themselves, make the environments more impressive. The scene where the Orient Express departs the train station is filmed beautifully. Once you learn that this was a large-scale set with a full-sized replica train and not an actual station blows you more away.

Although there’s a fair amount of CGI in the film, it’s not as much as you may think. And it doesn’t drown out any of the sets. It’s used only when and where it needs to be.

The use of color and contrast is used well throughout the film and adds another layer to already magnificent scenery.

Sound Rating – 4.5 out of 5

If you’re about to watch this film in 4K UltraHD™, then you’re in for a treat. That is provided you have the proper receiver and accompanying speakers. Audio is presented in English Dolby Atmos, as well as English Descriptive Audio Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish DD 5.1, and French DD 5.1.

Buyers of the Blu-ray™ format can rejoice with English DTS-HD-Master Audio 7.1, English Descriptive Audio 5.1, Spanish DD 5.1, and French DD 5.1.

Get ready to hear the sounds of the Orient Express as it travels from Istanbul through Eastern Europe. I was much impressed with the soundtrack which set the viewer’s mood well throughout the film.  The sound never felt overpowering the dialogue.

Extras Rating – 5 out of 5

The 4K UltraHD™ and Blu-ray™ disks come with nearly ten extra features which span nearly 75 minutes. The DVD is limited to but a handful of extras. I highly recommend you watch them all as they offer a better understanding of what it takes to make such a film.

Many of today’s youth and 20-somethings aren’t familiar with the English writer Agatha Christie. I know this firsthand. This is especially sad as she’s considered by many as the 20th Century’s greatest novelist. After watching all 19 minutes of the feature Agatha Christie: An Intimate Portrait, you’ll get a better understanding of who she was. We see and hear this through her audio recordings, as well as interviews with her family, writers, and researchers.

Let’s Talk About Hercule Poirot gets into the details on the world’s greatest detective. We hear from Kenneth Branagh and Screenwriter Michael Green on what it takes to create the Belgian Inspector. It’s worth watching.

Gallery is a collection of images taken from the numerous sets. Many are shown as the cast and crew saw them–without the special effects. Of all the features, it’s among my top three favorites.

The Art of Murder and All Aboard: Filming Murder on the Orient Express are my other two favorite features. So much is covered over 33 minutes that it’ll blow your mind in what it takes to make such a film. In The Art of Murder, we see firsthand what it takes to film in a confined space that is a train car. We’re shown the building of the massive sets, the replica train cars, locomotive, and more. We also see and hear from Costume Designer Alexandra Byrne and her team on putting together the incredible 1930s wardrobe.

All Aboard: Filming Murder on the Orient Express continues where the previous feature left off. We see and hear about the difficulties and challenges it took to film in 65mm. The crew discuss how the massive sets were made. One, in particular, was how the outdoor scenery was shot and displayed. As the train rides along the track, there’s plenty of scenery through its windows. This scenery was filmed in New Zealand, then stitched together, and then played back on over 3K LED displays to the left and right of the train cars. Rather than seeing a green screen, the actors saw actual scenery, which in turn makes their performance a bit easier. The technical aspects of making this film are most impressive.

Music of Murder is a 7-minute discussion by Composer Patrick Doyle regarding the film’s score. You get to see and hear how all the string instruments and french horns were used to set the various moods throughout the movie.

Murder on the Orient Express Blu-ray Review

Olivia Colman, left, and Judi Dench star in Twentieth Century Fox’s “Murder on the Orient Express.”

Also included on all versions of the film are 13 deleted scenes which span 17 minutes. Watch them with or without the director’s commentary. Some are brief, lasting only seconds, and leave you wondering whether should they have remained in the film. Others like the Alternate Opening and Dreamscape elicit a different response. They leave you wondering why they were filmed at all.

Murder on the Orient Express Blu-ray Review

Michelle Pfeiffer stars in Twentieth Century Fox’s “Murder on the Orient Express.”

After having grossed $350M worldwide, it is rumored, and probably correctly so, that Kenneth Branagh will reprise his role of Hercule Poirot in Death on the Nile. It should be out in the fall of 2019. I look so forward to seeing that mustache again.
