  7. To advance or return to a previous track, press and hold the “+” and “-” buttons for two seconds, respectively.

Design and Features

Per the Audio-Technica website, “The ATH-ANC100BT QuietPoint® wireless in-ear headphones combine Audio-Technica’s proprietary active noise-cancelling technology with Bluetooth® wireless technology to give you greater freedom and listening pleasure in areas of high ambient noise.”

The in-ear portion of the ANC100BT comes with a hard plastic outer shell in a somewhat glossy black finish. The earbuds are angled and noticeably so to fit your ears better. They’re fixed in position which is preferred by this reviewer.

The controller is located approximately two feet down from each earbud. The controller is intriguing as it’s an alligator clip design. On one end is the audio cable before it branches out to each ear. On the other is the USB connection for charging and to go wired to an audio player.

Audio-Technica ANC100BT Review

On the wide-sided top are the mic, the circular logo, and the Play/Pause button. If you’re like me, you’ll forget that the button is even there and use Play/Pause directly from the audio source. I’m not saying it’s bad placement. I simply forget it’s there.

The opposite wide side has the alligator-mouthed clip with another AT logo. From my testing, the clip holds very well onto a shirt or jacket.

On the long, thinner side with the controls, there are the On/Off slider, noise-cancelling and Bluetooth light indicators, and volume push buttons.

Silicone tips come in four sizes: XS, S, M & L, plus there’s a Medium-sized Comply™ foam set.

One downside is the headset cannot be used while charging.

The quality of workmanship from Audio-Technica is high. In testing, the buttons worked flawlessly during music and phone calls. I was never worried about the cord being pulled out the controller as there’s plenty of slack.

“An internal lithium polymer rechargeable battery powers the headphones, giving you approximately 10 hours of continuous Bluetooth and ANC use on a full charge. The headphones come with a 30 cm (1′) USB charging cable, a 0.6 m (2.0′) audio cable with 3.5 mm (1/8″) stereo mini-plug, and a protective carrying pouch.”

Audio Performance

As I often state, the most critical factor regarding headphones is sound quality, followed by fit and feel. The Audio-Technica ATH-ANC100BT in-ear wireless headphones were tested across music from the artists and playlists listed above using my Amazon Music account.

This time around, I didn’t test the headphones in the gym. Even though they’re lightweight and held firmly in my ears, I was worried about the control module bouncing off my shirt.

Audio-Technica ANC100BT Review
Audio-Technica ANC100BT Review

The first test on how well these earbuds sounded was with hard rock music from the likes of The Smashing Pumpkins, Shinedown, and Rush.

When it came to percussion instruments like drums and cymbals, the ANC100BT produced bright sounds. Percussion on these albums was by far my favorite to listen to, followed by acoustic guitar. The detailed drum work across the three rock albums was crazy good. Please take a listen to Today or Rocket from Siamese Dream. You won’t be disappointed. Who doesn’t like to hear Neil Peart or Jimmy Chamberlin hammer away on the drums?

Bass audio was a bit soft, and pretty much expected as the ANC100BT isn’t labeled a bass-heavy pair of headphones. I couldn’t enjoy Geddy Lee’s base work to its fullest. It took second fiddle to vocals, guitar, and drums.

Pop music from female artists such as Halsey’s hopeless fountain kingdom and BADLANDS and Tove Lo’s Queen Of The Clouds sounded well. The vocals across these albums shined, but like their rock band brothers, bass audio wasn’t quite where I would have liked it. If you take a listen to The Way That I Am or Thousand Miles by Tove Lo, you know bass should be more pronounced with a bit more clarity.

Overall I was very pleased with the audio emanating from this sub-$100 pair of headphones.

Conclusion

From a physical design perspective, I found these earbuds to be very comfortable in my ears and very portable whether clasped onto a shirt or coat.

Audio life of 10-20 hours (depending on its use) is more than enough to cover one week’s worth of commutes to work plus every lunch break. The audio quality is quite good with its 20 Hz – 24 kHz range. The ATH-ANC100BT headphones are staying put in my collection with a lot more use coming.

Audio-Technica ATH-DSR7BT Review

Per the press release, “The ATH-DSR9BT and ATH-DSR7BT are the first wireless headphones to employ Audio-Technica’s new Pure Digital Drive system, which keeps the audio signal completely digital from the source directly to the headphones’ drivers, without the need for D/A conversion stages that typically degrade the sound quality.”

“The rechargeable ATH-DSR9BT and ATH-DSR7BT support aptX™ HD, aptX™ and AAC codecs (as well as the SBC format) at up to 24-bit/48kHz signals in Bluetooth mode and deliver Hi-Res Audio playback at up to 24-bit/96kHz when connected to a digital source with the included USB cable.”

[envira-gallery id=”9594″]

Here’s What You Need To Know for Operation

  1. To pair the headphone to your mobile device, slide the power switch to the ON position The time this takes varies based on your device. Three white lights will flash in a particular order. Then head to the Bluetooth Settings on your mobile device and pair to ATH-DSR7BT.
  2. Volume up and down is controlled by sliding the volume control to the + or – position. A double beep will let you know once the minimum or maximum volume has been reached.
  3. Sliding the volume controller to the + or – position with a 2-second hold will forward or reverse a music track.
  4. The tap controller controls telephone operations such as answering, ending, and rejecting calls. When receiving a call, a quick tap answers the call; a 2-second tap rejects it. To end a call, double tap the controller. A quick tap also controls playing and pausing of music.
  5. Playtime lasts for 15 hours with a 1,000 hour (estimated) standby time. Charging the headphones takes approximately 4 hours. The number of white lights that will flash depends on the current charge level. A blinking red light will show when the battery is low. Charging can be done with the power switch turned to ON or OFF.

Sound Reality Design and Features

At first glance, the ATH-DSR7BT looks very similar to the ATH-SR5BT we reviewed one year ago. After all, they’re both part of the Sound Reality lineup.

The outer headband surface, as well as the ear pads, are made from leather or vegan leather. I couldn’t determine which, but I highly suspect it’s the latter. Regardless, they’re very soft and comfortable. The quality of the workmanship is very high.

Both the headband and ear pads contain some form of memory foam, so every time you remove the headset, they’ll return to their designed state.

Determining which side is left or right is a bit confusing. The “L” & “R” designations on the outside are small and hard to read, especially when light hits it at a particular angle. The markings should have been a more visible color like that on the ear cup, maybe even larger. All you need to know is that the left ear cup is the one with the NFC marker on the headband. Cups can rotate 90° degrees in and roughly 10° out.

[envira-gallery id=”9593″]

The headband can fit a wide range of head frames with its eleven adjustable positions. Button and switch placement appears to be handled well, but as a former design engineer, I would have argued for a change or two. As it stands, NFC, the tap controller, the volume controller, and the charging port are on the left, while the power switch is on the right. I would have preferred the tap controller on the outer center of the right ear cup. I’ve seen this design before on a Libratone model, and I rather liked it. Overall, construction is well executed and assures high quality.

The headphones come with four Bluetooth Codecs: aptX™ HD, aptX™, AAC, SBC. Each playback codec yields a different light on the left ear cup. For instance, a purple light in the 3rd position designates aptX™ HD. Refer to Page 10 of the user manual for more information on this topic.

Included in the packaging is a carrying bag which has soft protective lining. There’s also a 2-meter audio/charging cable.

The ATH-DSR7BT (and ATH-DSR9BT) wireless headphones are currently available in one color. Should an additional color be introduced, this post will be updated.

Audio Performance

I repeat this time after time again when reviewing speakers and headphones; the most important factor is the quality of sound. These over-ear digital drive headphones were tested across a broad range of music using the playlist listed above. Each album was sampled against comparable current model $200-$300 headphones, and results were noted. When you’re testing headphones with 45 mm drivers and a frequency response of 5 Hz – 40 kHz, you expect high-quality sound. It’s a good thing the ATH-DSR7BT headphones delivered the goods.

The quality of vocal and instrumental reproduction (guitars, keyboards, drums, etc.) was most impressive and didn’t falter even up to the highest volume setting. I expected bass to sound good partly because of the headphones list price, but boy was it properly balanced. The overall audio was high-quality and free of distortion. I know this because I conducted something called ‘The Electronic Music Test.’ I take an album from an electronic group like The Prodigy or a rock band like Shinedown and put the headphones through its paces. (Feel free to insert your choice of artist or group who happens to play instrument-rich music.)

[envira-gallery id=”9592″]

After having played albums from the rock acts listed above, I can report that this headset met and exceeded my expectations. Bass sounds were deep, rich, and even layered throughout the volume range. Take a listen to Zedd’s Lost At Sea or Codec or Lana Del Rey’s Gods & Monsters. You can distinctly hear layered bass sounds one on top of another. I’ve only heard bass like this from one other set of headphones in this price range.

Vocals come out smooth and full of life. The vocal reproduction of Ellie Goulding and the 3 L’s (Lana Del Rey, Lady Gaga, and Lorde) sounded terrific. The vocals of all the female artists were amazingly vivid.

These over-ear headphones are engineered with 45 mm True Motion drivers designed to deliver detailed audio reproduction. After using these headphones extensively around my home, I can wholeheartedly say that they’re the best sub-$300-priced headphones I’ve listened to date.

A Few Things I Noticed

Now, I wouldn’t be much of a reviewer if I didn’t find some fault(s) with these Audio-Technica Sound Reality headphones. The feature I disliked the most and is in need of improvement is the microphone. Whenever I took a call while wearing the headset, the person I was speaking with couldn’t hear me too well. I’m not certain what the issue is, but I’ve read a similar account with the more expensive ATH-DSR9BT headphones. Suffice to say, the headphones came off, and I spoke on my mobile phone the old-fashioned way.

Extended use does create some perspiration on the earpads, but this should be expected. So long as leather or leather-like materials are used for the earpads, this issue will persist.

Conclusion

Minus one issue, the feature-rich Audio-Technica ATH-DSR7BT wireless headphones performed phenomenally. The production of strong vocals and clear bass at the highest volume setting was truly music to my ears. But still, I needed to turn that volume down to save my hearing for another day.

These Sound Reality headphones are very comfortable after many hours of continuous use. At $299, the ATH-DSR7BT are the best headphones I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing in 2017, and not just from Audio-Technica. I don’t say this lightly. From an audio standpoint, whether it’s an in-ear, on-ear, or over-ear model, this pure digitally driven pair of headphones is the best sub-$300 headset around. We highly recommend you look into these. Our sample unit is staying right here.

If you have a loved one and are considering getting this person headphones for a birthday or holiday, put the ATH-DSR7BT on your wishlist. You’ll need to get a sizeable red stocking to fit it in.

Audio-Technica Headphones 2017 ATH-DSR9BT

If you were to ask what I look forward to most at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, my response would be the latest products from Audio-Technica. Audio-Technica ATH-SR5BT Headphones Review

Hi-Res Audio / Sound Reality Design

These on-ear headphones have a well-executed design. These sleek headphones come in two colors: Black and White.

Since I recently reviewed the ATH-MSR7 hi-res audio headphones, I already had an idea of what these headphones might be like. Straight out of the box; they exceeded my expectations. In our previous review, we noted that the headband was a little bit too tight, and the over-ear cushions were slightly too shallow, causing your ear to rub up against the speaker occasionally – this was not at all the case with the ATH-SR5BT. Perhaps it is because these are on-ear headphones, as opposed to over-ear headphones. Regardless, I found the cushioning on these to be much thicker, softer and more comfortable.

The overall design of these headphones is much like a scaled down version the ATH-MSR7, but with the same 45mm True Motion Drivers. The headphones weigh in at 6.5 ounces, a bit more with the 3.9′ cable. The package contents include a soft cloth carrying case, a 3.9′ audio cable for wired use, and a 3.3′ USB cable.

There are several features on these headphones that allow for comprehensive functionality, without having to pull your phone out of your pocket. The left earphone features a condenser mic, a multi-function Play/Pause/Skip/Call switch, a micro-USB charging port, and a 3.5mm jack for wired use. On the right earphone, there is an On/Off button for Bluetooth pairing.

Hi-Res Audio Performance

When reviewing headphones, the most important performance factor is the quality of sound. Since the ATH-SR5BT are Bluetooth headphones, we have two sound profiles to consider: wired and wireless sound.

As wired headphones, the ATH-ST5BT sounded great. Much like the ATH-MSR7, there’s a bright sound balance. Consequently, I found myself slightly dissatisfied with the bass presence in certain genres, one being Hip-Hop. As noted in our ATH-MSR7 review, if you are a bass head, these are not the headphones for you. However, many audio companies drown their sound profile in the low-frequency (bass) range, making it hard to appreciate the finer parts of music. Audio-Technica cannot be faulted for their sound profile, which is overall very neutral and handles all music well. With wired use, the high-resolution audio offered high-quality detail – the type of detail that makes you hear a new layer of sound in a song that you have known forever.[Tweet “As wired headphones, the ATH-ST5BT sounded great. Much like the ATH-MSR7, there’s a bright sound balance.”]

The Bluetooth sound profile is satisfying. If you are an audiophile, you will notice that the sound is slightly thinner with Bluetooth than it is with wired use, but that is to be expected. As far as wireless music goes, these headphones perform very well, and I have to say, I enjoyed being cable-free during my commute.

With an iPhone 6s, the Bluetooth pairing works outstandingly well. After adding the “ATH-SR5BT” to your saved Bluetooth devices, and powering them on, the connection is instant. The only issue I found with the Bluetooth connectivity was that the headphones volume and the iPhone volume do not link together, so you will have to sync up the two volumes accordingly. More importantly, these headphones offer superb battery life, lasting up to 38 hours on a single charge courtesy of the 3.7V DC lithium polymer battery. Your mobile device’s battery will die quicker with Bluetooth enabled, but you won’t find the need charge these headphones frequently, even with heavy use. And when you do, it will take approximately four hours to recharge.

Conclusion

At $199, these headphones are a good buy. They feature a classy and sleek design. They offer high-performance Bluetooth connectivity, battery longevity, and even the option of high-resolution audio for critical listening. It’s important to remember that Bluetooth is incapable of streaming audio at high-resolution quality. If you’re in it for the audio alone, check out a different pair of headphones like Audio-Technica’s MSR7 (you can find our review here). If you are looking for a high-value, on-ear headphone, with high-performance Bluetooth capability, look no further than the Audio-Technica SR5BT.

Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 Review – SonicPro Headphones

Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 review

Audio-Technica Introduces Us To High-Resolution Audio

The Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 Review

Priced at around $250, the Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 is easily the most affordable pair of headphones for producing high-resolution audio. These over-ear headphones are engineered with Audio-Technica’s 45mm ‘True Motion Drivers’, which are designed to deliver the most detailed audio reproduction. After using these headphones extensively in the home and studio setting, I can confidently say that they are some of the best headphones I have ever heard from Audio-Technica and a high-value investment for any audio purist. Let’s take a look in this Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 review.

Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 review

Pros:

  • Incredibly Precise Sound
  • High-Resolution Audio
  • Beautiful Design
  • 3 Interchangeable Cable Options

Cons:

  • Tight Fit
  • Mild Low End
  • No In-Line Volume Control
  • Headband/Cuffs Aren’t Leather

Audio-Technica Design

Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 reviewAvailable in Black and Gun Metal Gray, the ATH-MSR7 headphones look beautiful. We tested out the Gun Metal Gray, which features light brown ear and head cushions. The leather and metal portions are blended seamlessly throughout the headphones, giving them a very elegant and professional appearance.

The overall construction is extremely well executed and assures high quality. The headphones include three different 3.5mm cables; one standard, one extended and one with an inline microphone control. Also included is a soft cloth carrying bag.

The ear pads and headband are made with soft, ultra-comfortable memory foam that holds snugly on your head. While the snug fit ensured these headphones would stay in place during my daily commute, I found them to be a little too tight after wearing them for a couple of hours in a studio-type situation.

SonicPro® Performance

Now, on to the most important element of these headphones: the sound.

Personally, I loved the clarity of the MSR7’s audio profile. If you are a bass-head, then these are not the headphones for you; the bass is present but not overwhelming. The balanced EQ produced by the 45 mm True Motion Drivers make these headphones ideal for studio work and anyone who wants to hear audio in its most unaltered form. From my Tidal account, I streamed Hi-Res Audio through these ‘bad boys.’ The precision and clarity of the sound were outstanding. Acoustic guitars, orchestras, and highly articulate music paired best with these headphones, as they output sharp detail.

The only issue with this intense clarity is that at high volumes, the headphones can produce excessive highs that are sharp to the ear. However, at moderately high volumes the clarity is maintained without any notable distortion. The MSR7’s produce sound so accurately that even the most minute peak or dip in a poorly produced audio file will be highly evident – but that could be argued as a strong suit. I would suggest any producer check their recording on these headphones before release.

Final Thoughts on the ATH-MSR7 Sonic Pro® Headphones

All in all, these headphones get our strongest recommendation. They work wonderfully as a casual over-ear headphone for the daily commuter and work equally as well for any precision-minded producer who wants to catch every detail in their mix. At $250, ATH-MSR7’s are the most affordable high-resolution audio headphones on the market – coupled with the eye-catching design and detailed sound; you cannot go wrong with Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7.[Tweet “At $250, the ATH-MSR7’s are the most affordable high-resolution headphones on the market @USAudioTechnica”]

Audio-Technica ATH-CKX9iS review

Review: Audio-Technica ATH-CKX9iS SonicFuel® In-Ear Headphones

For active audio listeners who need in-ear headphones that provide reliable stability, Audio-Technica may have the solution for you. The SonicFuel® ATH-CKX9iS is a near perfect pair of daily in-ear headphones for people who live active lives and need headphones that can keep up. We present our Audio-Technica ATH-CKX9iS review.

Audio-Technica ATH-CKX9iS review

  • Well-constructed exterior design
  • Comfortable, lightweight fit at 5.1 ounces
  • 3 Sizes of ear stabilizers & 5 pairs of in-ear tips make for a perfect fit
  • 3.5mm L-shaped audio jack prevents wire fray
  • 13.5mm drivers
  • The flat 1.2-meter cable is tangle resistant
  • In-line control featuring microphone, volume slider, multi-function button

Cons:

  • In-line microphone positioned too low for optimal vocal pickup
  • Sensitive volume slider
  • Not waterproof or sweat-resistant
  • Upper-mids lack clarity
  • Earphones are large and protrude from ear

The SonicFuel® Design and Features

The ATH-CKX9iS earbuds are very large, but their comprehensive design reveals why. The most prominent features of the ATH-CKX9iS are the C-shaped silicone rubber grips that serve to secure the earphone when you are on the move. They stay put, and you can be confident that they will stand up to any accidental pulls that might occur during activity. With three different sizes of rubber in-ear grips, four pairs of rubber tips and one pair of Comply™ foam tips; you can find the perfect combination for your ear shape and activity level.

For those who prefer to store their headphones after use, you’re in luck. The SonicFuel ATH-CKX9iS headphones come with a hard carrying case.

[envira-gallery id=”4531″]

The ATH-CKX9iS features an in-line control for audio adjustments and phone calls on the go. The in-line control includes a microphone, volume slider and a single control button, which operates the play/pause, skip and call functions. Additionally, holding the button activates Siri and GooglePlay on an Apple iPhone and Google Android devices, respectively. While the in-line control handles most functions well; the volume slider only adjusts the sound level of the speakers themselves and not of your phone. This particular slider makes for less smooth volume adjustments and the absence of a true zero. Minor issues aside, these earphones are incredibly stable and stand up to all the bouncing and other movements that would cause standard ear buds to fall out.

The SonicFuel® Sound

The ATH-CKX9iS headphones sound superb! The 13.5mm dynamic drivers produce premium quality sound performance that is sure to compliment any of your favorite tunes. The clarity of these earphones is a notable factor, and the output mix features a strong bass presence. Overall, they sound great. The highs and lows present a solid mix that proves perfect for pop, hip-hop or other high-energy genres. While useful for exercising and casual listening, these earphones are not ideal for those seeking a flat mix. Additionally, the upper-mids are not very pronounced in the mix resulting in subtle presence for sounds such as brass horns.

[envira-gallery id=”4534″]

ATH-CKX9iS Overall Performance and Final Thoughts

Overall, these ATH-CKX9iS are fantastic headphones for their price and purpose! With excellent sound, high-performance design and an Amazon price of $60; the Audio-Technica ATH-CKX9iS in-ear headphones deserve to be heard. Audio-Technica ATH-CKX9iS reviewThese are some of the best daily use headphones on the market, and for less than $100 provide an excellent alternative to many of the other manufacturer’s current traditional designs. You will love the sound these Audio-Technica’s produce.

Review: Audio-Technica ATH-SPORT1iS Headphones

01/15/2016 By Tom McLaughlin

The 4 Color Patterns of the Audio-Technica ATH-SPORT1iS Review

Introducing The Audio-Technica ATH-SPORT1iS In-Ear Headphones

Athletes and fit freaks should rejoice when they hear about the Audio-Technica ATH-SPORT1iS in-ear headphones. This feature-rich model comes with IPX5 waterproof certification (more on this later), U-type cables, an in-ear/behind-the-ear lightweight design, all for a price at under $40. Sounds like a dream, right?

So I thought I would give them their own workout while at the gym doing my workout. Are they the ideal sports headphones? Here’s what I learned.

Design

I’m not usually one for wearing in-ear/behind-the-ear headphones. Suffice to say, this was a bit of an adjustment and a learning experience. Not to mention the unfamiliar design of these headphones from the wires to the pivoting hinge.

We at Beantown received a pair of the SonicSport ATH-SPORT1iS headphones in Navy-Yellow to sample. In my opinion, this particular color scheme is the least attractive. So it’s a good thing there are three more color schemes available.[envira-gallery id="3794"]

Color patterns shown above are in order from left to right. They are the following: Navy-Yellow, Pink-Gray, Red-Black, and Black.

Read:   Review: Antec's SugarCube Portable Mini Bluetooth Speaker

The Earbuds

So let’s begin with the positives. These headphones are customizable for just the right fit. Now, whether that fit is comfortable or not is still, at this moment, up in the air.

The ATH-SPORTS1iS headphones ear tips come in two varieties and they are all interchangeable. The first is your typical, standard silicone ear tip which comes in 4 sizes: XS, S, M, & L. The second is of a more rigid design and it comes in 3 sizes: S, M, & L. It’s this rigidity that would lead you to wear this variety outdoors. You see, this rigidity allows for some ambient noise to make its way to your brain. So, if you want to hear that approaching car when you’re jogging alongside a road, then the rigid ear tip is the wiser choice.

When you’re in a controlled environment like the gym and don’t want to hear the surrounding noise, wear the softer design. This choice will isolate noise better allowing for you to focus on the task at hand.

The headphones plastic frames loop around your ears and secures the ear tips in place. It performs this function quite well. This frame also has a hinge that opens for better placement over your ears. Then you close it to a point that keeps the frame from maneuvering.

Simply put, the ATH-SPORT1iS covers all shapes and sizes of ears.

The Wiring

There’s more to headphones than just the ear tips, so let’s talk wires.

I have to admit, upon first use, the wires on the ATH-SPORT1iS headphones baffled me. I removed them from the case before leaving for the gym and then, fiddled with them in the locker room. I still couldn’t figure out the cord set-up. What followed was three adjustments over the course of my workout, before I got it right, or so I thought. But even after that, I noticed how they were supposed to work and came to the realization that I had actually adjusted them incorrectly all along.

The 1.2-meter long cable for these wires is called a U-type. This means that it’s supposed to loop around your neck like a wireless headphone, except there are a lot of wires. The gold-plated 3.5mm jack plugs into your mobile device with the wire going up the right side of your head. This is where you use the supplied clip to secure the wire to your clothing, to prevent any tugging. This wire splits into two around your neck to the headphones, with one side longer than the other. They wrap behind your neck to the ears.

To put it plainly, it was confusing for this first time user. But it’s undeniable that once you figure it out, it’s quite convenient. I loved being able to pull an earbud out when taking a break and just hanging it over my neck. It’s something I don’t usually get with wired earbuds, but this fits the pattern of the ATH-SPORT1iS thus far.

Aside from this feature, the wires are thin in order to be as lightweight as possible. On the flip side, the wires can easily tangle if you don’t take care to avoid it.

The Microphone

The (condenser) mic is on one side, with the universal button on the other. This button is to answer/end calls, control music, pause, skip, rewind, etc. What’s different is the slider between the two. I haven’t seen one like this since an old pair of headphones my parents purchased for me as a kid.

With it, you can adjust the sound on your smartphone (and other compatible devices) to make it as loud as possible. Then, slide the mic up or down to change the volume coming through the headphones. This change is independent of the volume on the phone for easy access to a wide range of volume.

Sound

Audio-Technica is a well-known name in the music and sound industry since 1962. From what my research tells me, the ATH-SPORT1iS headphones follow with the sound quality you would find in any other headphones produced by them. “Crisp/clear audio” is what the case says. The sound is crisp, sometimes too crisp. And a bit light when compared to Monster’s Adidas Sport Response earbuds.

The ATH-SPORT1iS in-ear headphones are equipped with 8.5 mm drivers so they can definitely push out some pretty good sound.

Functionality and Verdict

The ATH-SPORT1iS headphones are designed for athletic use, indoors and out. They’ll withstand water and sweat with their IPX5 waterproof certification. (I told you there would be more on this ingress protection later.) This means that you can wash them off after use, but don’t toss them in with the laundry. And with their lightweight and sturdy build, they won’t fall off or out of your ears.

In my opinion, this design comes with two sides. On one side, you’re getting a fantastic workout headphone. On the other, and this is just my opinion, I would feel a little embarrassed wearing these on a walk around say Boston Common or the Back Bay. It’s not designed for the street walk. In this situation, I would feel more comfortable with either the ATH-CKX5iS or ATH-CKX7iS models. These Audio-Technica SonicFuel models have a less complex wire setup but come with a $10-40 higher list price.

As stated above, a good fit can be found by anyone using these earbuds. The problem I encountered was that they weren’t ideally comfortable beyond the 30-40 minute run time. There was some minor irritation behind my ears. It wasn’t much of a surprise as my ears weren’t used to a behind-the-ear design.

If you’re planning on getting a lower-priced, good pair of wired sports headphones, these are worth looking into. The sound quality is good. It isn’t anything to go crazy over, but it isn’t weak either. The waterproof design is great, and the secure fit is one of the best I’ve found. The ATH-SPORT1iS is only $40 and for that price, you’re getting a decent product. If you’re looking for a higher level of sports headphones, Audio-Technica offers 3 more models as seen here ranging from $45-60.[Tweet “The ATH-SPORT1iS is only $40 and for that price, you’re getting a decent product.”]
