HBO’s The Young Pope Season 1 Review

04/29/2017 By Hakan Can

The Young Pope Season 1 Review

At the end of 2016, HBO released its newest drama series, The Young Pope. At first glance, this show solely appeared to be interesting, but after having finished the 10-episode first season, profound and dark are better descriptors. The series takes you into the strange mind of Pope Pius XIII, aka Lenny Belardo, played by Jude Law, the first American Pope in history. Secrets, Sins, and debauchery run rampant in and outside the walls of the Vatican, and the over conservative Lenny takes on his role to make sure he’s in the know. Along with his stubbornness, mystery and pain run so deep that you yearn for more. Law’s role as Lenny is believable and utter perfection. Let’s dive into HBO’s The Young Pope Season 1 review.

The Young Pope Season 1 Review

The Young Pope Season 1 Review

The Young Pope isn’t a series that is for the lighthearted, the subject matter covered can be difficult. There are many symbolic references and thematic situations within from art to the constant color red, and a series of rational and irrational relationships the evolve and unwind, enough to keep even historians and theologians intently watching for hours. The beginning sequence shows a series of art, and it’s not just any art hung upon the wall. They chronically cover critical time periods from the Jesus’ birth with Gerard van Honthorst’s, The Adoration of Shepherds to Maurizio Cattelan’s, The 9th Hour. The music used throughout the series also gives an eerie, devilish feel with its electric-techno type spiced with Lele Marchitelli’s instrumental outlook.

In a sea of naked babies, Lenny Belardo emerges and immediately you’re drawn in. There’s an uneasy feeling that overtakes you. The scene changes to Lenny waking up in bed and the radio starts to shuffle stations and go mysteriously in and out of reception. For the first time, we witness either a supernatural entity or Lenny, himself, as that being in nature. Who is he, what is he? Lenny is dark, but there is something that draws the viewer to continue watching. Finding out what’s inside of him could be pure and holy.

Lenny is an interesting character, he likes to accept gifts, does not like his photo taken or be told what to do, and wants to do everything on his own time. He’s a mysterious miracle worker, not revealed right away, but we’re shown small examples. He continues to doubt God’s existence, or so we think, but it may be just his way of showing God to others through his unique thought process and demeanor.

One of the only characters from the beginning who believes in his pureness is his faith mother, Sr Mary, played by Diane Keaton. She does a fantastic job in this role, and her night shirt is comical as well, but you must watch to find out what that says. We see at the beginning via a flashback that Sr Mary takes young Belardo in at the age of 8 after his birth parents, who appear to be hippies, leave him at an orphanage leaving Sr Mary to raise him.

The Young Pope Season 1 Review

Like that of a President or Prime Minister, one can only imagine being the Pope is not an easy task. There are times when it is gratifying, and there are trying times. You have a job to uphold, and one of the tasks as Pope is to deliver homilies on a balcony overlooking Saint Peter’s Square. Since Lenny’s stubbornness would like him to avoid said task or anything else that relates to public speaking, he puts off writing his first homily as long as he is allowed. He knows the time is quickly approaching and as 9:30 PM on the eve of him to deliver his message; the sun has set. Saint Peter’s square, packed with the anticipation of what the crowd’s new Pope will say. He approaches the balcony, and face darkened, the masses blast into a roaring cheer as Pope Pius XIII begins.

Not only does he begin but in such an odd manner by asking what they, the crowd, have forgotten and then says they have forgotten God. In a scolding tone, he tells them they need to be closer to God than each other and that he, himself, is closer to God than to the crowd. Lenny’s followers don’t expect to hear this from their Pope, especially a brand new one who is attempting to gain acceptance. His big takeaway was, “I have nothing to say to those who even the slightest doubt about God, all I can do is remind them of my scoring.”

He continues to say he doesn’t have to prove God exists; they need to prove God doesn’t exist. If they’re unable to prove he doesn’t exist, it means he does exist. Without God, you are as good as dead. A street-goer shouts out to see his face, Lenny responds for that to happen, they must see God, and when they see God, they will see him.

Unclear as to what his homily meant, the following day the media is requesting a press conference for him to explain in more detail. Lenny refuses to do such a thing, but tells Sr Mary she will be doing the press conference in his place and this leads to more confusion. Lenny continues this path of mystery and says “absence is the presence, fundamentals of mystery, the mystery that will be at the center of the church.”

Sr Mary goes to talk with Cardinal Michael Spencer, Lenny’s faith father and mentor, played by James Cromwell who genuinely knows Lenny as much as Sr Mary does. Michael feels as Lenny’s parents rejected him, he seeks them within himself. He feels Lenny wants to make the world suffer for what he has felt from that rejection. We can see this is a theme within just the first few episodes as Lenny continues to flash back to him as a young boy, walking in the darkness, alone, searching for something. Sometimes we see his young parents getting on a boat, watching him as they leave the dock, leaving Lenny by himself. Lenny’s character is constantly struggling with the abandonment of his birth parents. Lenny tells Sr Mary she always talks about his holiness and the miracles he can perform but not the only miracle he needs and is to see his parents again. She tells him to have faith, and he will see them again. He says he is getting old and does not want to see them dead.

We also see a series of flashbacks with a beautiful young blonde girl, and early on we are unsure of who she is. Come to find out it was the one girl Lenny was fond of when he was younger, and he continues to wonder where she went. We don’t know of his intention in the present, but that is revealed later as a scandal approaches the highest level between Cardinal Voiello, Vatican’s Secretary of State, a veteran insider of church politics, played by Silvio Orlando. Cardinal Voiello works very closely with Lenny once he became Pope and you see the transition of this relationship evolve.

The Young Pope Season 1 Review

Ester played by Ludivine Sagnier, a resident of Vatican City, married, claims to be a devoted Catholic although her continual affair with one of the priests in the Vatican would lead you to believe otherwise. You want to like her, but her aloofness makes it rather difficult at first. Ester is an important character in the series, and the relationship that develops between Lenny and her is one that sometimes seems to go astray, but once you see the understanding, you get back on track. She and her husband are sterile but yearns and feverishly prays for God to intervene to make this happen.

Cardinal Voilello and many others would like Lenny to resign; his attitude, ruling, and everything in between are not welcoming. Unwilling to voluntarily leave, the Congregation for the Clergy takes it upon themselves to do what they need to remove him. They attempt to set him up by using Ester as their pawn. She becomes closer to Lenny, and again the viewer doesn’t know whether to like her or not due to the uncertainty of her intentions.

Throughout the series, we hear bits and pieces about a man named Archbishop Kurtwell. Kurtwell, we know, is under investigation for possible sexual allegations but to what extent is unclear. That is until Lenny advises Cardinal Gutierrez, played by Javier Camara, to leave for New York and investigate but not come back until he has actual evidence of the allegations. Cardinal Gutierrez is extremely out of sorts as he has never left the walls of the Vatican since he arrived many years ago. We know a bit of Gutierrez’s character early on, but there is much more that evolves after we see him become a major character in the last few episodes. What Gutierrez finds in New York under this investigation is a tipping point and turning point to Lenny’s character, and we feel that more of this new persona will be brought forth in Season 2.

Each character thus far has encountered many growing opportunities, some less fortunate than others but nonetheless each has evolved a lot over ten episodes. We’re pleased to see how the story comes together here in the 10th episode. Saint Peter square is packed, but this time instead of the night sky, its daylight. Cardinals are out and ready surrounding their Pope, and as Lenny approaches the balcony, he looks at the people for the first time, he smiles.

They all wait. Lenny speaks and says “who is God, God is a mind that opens.” He tells the full story of the Blessed Juana, a story we have not heard entirely before now.

We went back and forth on telling this story and felt it was better to watch it and not give it away. What we will share is part of the dozens of questions some children were asking the Blessed Juana as she lay dying, “are we dead or are we alive, are we tired or beggars, are we healthy or sick, are we good or bad, do we still have time or has it run out, are we young or are we old, are we clean or are we dirty, are we fools or are we smart, are we true or are we false, are we rich or are we poor, are we kings or are we servants, are we good or are we beautiful, are we warm or are we cold, are we happy or are we blind, are we disappointed or joyful, are we lost or are we found, are we men or are we women.”

“It doesn’t matter” replied the Blessed Juana and added, “God does not allow himself to be seen. God does not shout or whisper or write or hear. God does not chat. God does not comfort us.” And all of the children asked her, “who is God?” and Juana replied, “God smiles” and only then does everyone understand.

The Young Pope Season 1 Review

The story is so impactful and influential; it triggers many thoughts. The most important thing is the element of Catholicism in this scene and how it can replace any other religious belief in a god, or in a spiritual aspect. Although there is an attachment to God as a reference, there is no actual attachment to one religion, which makes it more impactful. As he tells this story, we see a recap of the entire season and how each one of the questions the children asks reflects back to a character we saw along the way. Some may have been a small part and forgotten, others large and still engraved in our minds, but each played a bigger role than we once thought, and we see this during this time.

Lenny continues, begs all of them to smile. He takes the telescope Belardo gave him to watch each smile, and he sees some familiar faces but is unsure of the actual existence. Lenny encounters for the second-time heart attack symptoms but assures everyone it’s nothing. As he waves to the crowd and steps back from the balcony, he takes some deep breaths, his eyes roll to the back of his head, and he sees Jesus in the clouds. Whether he is dying is left to be seen, but given we have Season 2 to look forward to, we are going with panic attack symptoms, and he will continue to rise above as Pope Pius XIII.

The camera backs up upon Vatican City and Rome, and HBO’s The Young Pope Season 1 comes to a conclusion.

Conclusion

Now, if you think there’s more to this story, you’re correct, much more. We cannot put out every detail here. Otherwise, it would spoil the season for you and that is not the intent. The intent is to make you engaged enough to want to watch for yourself, to draw your conclusions. That’s a wrap for The Young Pope Season 1 review. We’ll all see what happens in The Young Pope Season 2.

Ausangate Socks – Best Alpaca Socks Review

04/19/2017 By Hakan Can

Ausangate alpaca socks review

Ausangate Alpaca Socks Review

Writing about socks, much less alpaca socks, is not the norm here at Beantown. Up until now, it’s the exception. About a month ago, we decided to transition this consumer tech-only site to one which covers a whole lot more (tech, cool toys, gaming hardware, entertainment, and cool apparel) but from a lifestyle perspective. While I’m sure there are sites out there like this, we’re not playing follow-the-leader. We’re keeping our work original and authentic. Recently, we were contacted to try something new in the apparel category. This brings us back to alpaca socks. So for our second clothing lifestyle post, let’s take a closer look in this Ausangate Alpaca Socks review.

Ausangate alpaca socks review

Ausangate Socks

This brand has the basics covered. While we’re only focusing on crew, casual, and hiking socks for this post, let it be known the folks at Ausangate also manufacture dress and ski socks, all of which are made from their patented Alpacor® blended alpaca fiber. What sets Ausangate apart from other alpaca sock manufacturers is this Alpacor® blend. With the addition of a little nylon and spandex, their socks are stronger and machine washable. You won’t get this from other brands whose socks are 100% alpaca. Those have to be hand washed and will almost certainly shrink. Good luck remembering to buy socks one size larger every time you shop.

This past weekend here in Boston, we had two ‘small’ events: the Boston Marathon and the Sports & Fitness Expo. As I walked around the latter, I checked out all of the sock manufacturers present. While there were only a handful of brands in the building, none offered product made from alpaca. These brands claim that their socks won’t lead to blisters, their socks wick away moisture, keep your feet warm and dry, etc. We’ve heard all of this before, and some of it may be true. But I came to the expo to conduct a test. I was wearing the Ausangate crew socks with my Mizuno running shoes.

Ausangate alpaca socks review

For 4+ hours, I walked the city wearing the Ausangate alpaca crew socks with smiles on my feet. Go ahead, imagine it for a moment. Happy feet.

Some of the features of the Alpacor® yarn is that they’re super soft, hypoallergenic, lanolin free, antimicrobial, odor free, and wick away moisture. This sock delivered on its promises. Based on my results, there’s no reason to look at anything but alpaca. Now, they did fray a little on the back heel, but this was my sneakers fault–it’s a bit worn in the lining.

The crew socks come in two colors, both with vented tops and ribbed bands, and list for $12.99. Alpacor® yarn content is between 75-80% depending on the color you choose. In case you’re wondering which has more, it’s the white socks.

Casual and Hiking Socks

Like their crew socks, Ausangate’s casual and hiking socks are nearly indistinguishable from their non-alpaca cousins. It’s only when you put them on do you feel (and notice) the difference. While I haven’t broken these two pairs of socks in just yet, I have tried them on, and they’re like butter. I’m looking forward to wearing the casual socks while I’m at the upcoming NAB Show in Las Vegas.

The features I described for the crew socks are all present in these casual and hiking socks. If you’re wearing the hiking socks around the house or apartment just to keep your feet warm, they do that and keep them dry. It’s amazing how much better these alpaca socks are from the Timberland® I’ve been wearing.

Ausangate alpaca socks review
Ausangate alpaca socks review

The Alpacor® casual socks come in three colors (sand, gray, and white) and list for $14.99. Alpacor® yarn content is high at 87%.

The Alpacor® heavyweight hiking socks come in two colors (gray/black and sand/brown) and list for $24.99. Alpacor® yarn content is high at 85%.

Both the casual and hiking socks are available for men and women.

Final Thoughts

Are Ausangate’s alpaca wool socks the best alpaca socks available? At this moment, it’s a difficult question to answer as I’ve just become a convert. If you’ve tried a few brands, then many of you alpaca sock wearers already know the answer. Having a favorite is alright.

There are a handful of alpaca sock manufacturers here in North and South America. As the use of alpaca fiber increases in popularity, the number of brands will surely grow. With the current generations of buyers caring and asking questions about product quality and integrity, it’s good to know that alpaca fiber is an eco-friendly and renewable animal material.

Now that I’ve worn Ausangate alpaca fiber socks, I wholeheartedly plan to never go back to the bamboo, cotton, nylon, rayon, and wool blends. These alpaca socks blow away those made of sheep’s wool by a wide margin. For a comprehensive Alpaca versus Wool comparison, check out this link.

Ausangate alpaca socks review

For a $11 or $25 per pair, Ausangate Socks may be priced a bit higher than your traditional (and mass-produced) wool socks. This all depends on what you’ve been wearing. In our opinion, the 10-20% or so price difference is justified and worth paying. This alpaca product you put on your feet is way better than the mass-marketed norm you’ve worn your entire life.

Ausangate alpaca socks are available for purchase on Amazon (see links below) as well as on their website.

Gaming: Patriot Viper V361 & V370 Headsets Review

04/17/2017 By Zach Can

Patriot Viper V361 V370 headset review

Patriot is best known for their DRAM memory, flash and solid state drives, and memory cards, and they have quite the selection for each. Back in 2015, Patriot introduced their first line of Viper Gaming hardware which we covered here. Roughly two years have passed, and their latest line of Viper Gaming hardware is making its debut. First up are the Viper V361 and V370 gaming headsets. They’re nearly identical except the latter having RGB lighting. Both headphones come with 7.1 virtual surround sound and heavy bass mode. Are they a worthy addition to your gaming rig? Let’s take a closer look in this Patriot Viper V361 and V370 gaming headsets review.Patriot Viper V361 V370 headset review

Patriot Viper V361 & V370 Gaming Headsets

Design

The Viper V361 has the standard headphone design. It adjusts manually into position like many of today’s headphones. Controls are built into the headset, which we believe is a step in the right direction. We prefer this controller design over a big-and-bulky control box on the cord. There’s a slider for the volume and a switch for the “Ultra Bass Response” which I’ll go into further later. There is no need for a microphone mute button because there’s an amazing swivel to mute functionality. These functions are beneficial into moving the V361 and V370 away from your standard gaming headphone.

Both headsets have a broad range of heads they can fit. The cord is 2+ Meters in length with a stand out red-and-black braided pattern giving it extra durability, making it harder for the cable to coil on itself.

[envira-gallery id=”8032″]

Both headphones are connected via USB. Each headset comes with two sets of earcups, leather, and vinyl, as the leather earcups can get quite sweaty in the summer.

The V361 lights up red when powered, while the V370 has RGB lighting which is customizable in the Viper Gaming software.

Performance

Patriot’s Viper software must be installed to enable the 7.1 virtual surround sound and configure the RGB lighting. The software works flawlessly for us. After the install, I just had to reboot, and we were good-to-go. The software’s user interface is clean and straightforward. You have options for volume on the mic, speakers.

Looking at the V370 headset, it comes with RGB lighting controls. The lighting controls have options for Static, Breathe, Blink, and Heartbeat. You can set the effect speed for most of them. Heartbeat produced a cool lighting effect as the headset would light up when sound was played.

[envira-gallery id=”8044″]

The Ultra Bass Response (UBR) system is similar to that on the Gamdias HEBE M1 RGB. Any heavy bass that is played causes the headset to vibrate giving you a slight jolt.

Based on our testing, I’d say these headphones can be worn for up to 3 hours of constant use. Beyond that, they start to become uncomfortable. Our ears were always in contact with the membrane inside the headset. After extended play time, this can cause some redness and irritation, so limit your playtime. I tried to re-adjust this part of the headset but to no avail.

When gaming with the headset, the 7.1 virtual surround sound was most useful by accurately pinpointing an enemy you can’t see. Games such as Penumbra Black Plague and SOMA are taken to that next level of horror. The 7.1 surround sound brought out dread and fear from every corner.

Regarding RGB lighting, it’s one of those personal preference features best left up to you. If it’s something you want, then head towards the direction of the V370. Otherwise, the Viper V361 headset is the better choice.

[envira-gallery id=”8026″]

Conclusion

For a $50 or $70 pair of headphones, these new Patriot Viper headsets truly deliver some high-end features for a low price: swivel-to-mute, ultra-bass response, no control box, and 7.1 virtual surround sound.

These headphones lean towards the higher-end of the spectrum than the lower-end. If you need a gaming headset that gets the job done well at a reasonable price, look no further. These Viper Gaming headphones are worth your time and consideration when looking within the $50-100 price range.

Gaming: Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO Amplifier Review

04/10/2017 By Zach Can

Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO Amplifier review

If you wear a Sennheiser gaming headset, then you already know how alluring and addictive they are. Some years ago, we got our hands on our first, their Game One gaming headset, and never let go. Since then, Sennheiser has continued to add to their gaming portfolio. About six months ago, they released two gaming audio amplifiers, the GSX 1000 and GSX 1200 PRO. Both audio amplifiers feature their “groundbreaking 7.1 virtual surround algorithm.” When I learned we were getting our hands on one to review, I became ecstatic. So without further adieu, let’s take a closer look in this Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO amplifier review.

Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO Amplifier Review

Design and Features

The GSX 1200 PRO amp comes out in a sleek box proudly displaying the LED screen. The device itself is surrounded by a cube with a kickstand that easily pops out from underneath. The raised dial display has a striking red color. There are touchscreen options for headphones/speakers, EQ balance, surround sound focus, stereo to 7.1, sidetone adjustment, and reverb. In the center of it all is the volume with the best volume slider I’ve ever felt. The metal ring around the display turns ever so effortlessly. The more you adjust the volume, the more addictive this action becomes.

On the sides of the cube, there’s microphone volume adjustment allowing for on-the-fly adjustment. On the back of the amplifier, there are connections for the microphone, headphones, speakers, power cord, and two chat link connections. The Chat Link connection is for up to eight GSX 1200 PRO amps to be linked up together to deliver hardwired communication. The audio amplifier also has four profiles for you to set and store your customized settings. You can switch to them with a tap of the finger.

Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO Amplifier reviewPerformance

The ability to switch between headphones and speakers comes in handy. It’s a quick, easy way to make changes without moving wires. EQ balance is nice, giving you the option to switch to Game, Music, Film, or Balanced. I didn’t use the Game setting too much because it made everything sound muffled.

The focus of the surround sound brings the sound right up front or far in the back. It actually sounded like it just moved five feet away. One of the main features of this amplifier is the 7.1 surround sound, and it delivers the goods. While it can’t beat the GSP 350 headsets actual 7.1 surround sound, it comes darn close.

We used this audio amplifier with two higher-end gaming headsets, the Sennheiser Game One and the Audio Technica ATH-AG1. The sounds from both headphones were spectacular.

Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO Amplifier review

The sidetone is adjustable to none, some, or a lot, along similar lines to the GSP 350 headset. The reverb adjustment, along with the stereo to 7.1 setting, radically changes how anything sounds. The reverb has none, some, or a lot, and with it enabled, makes any sound play like it was in a room, with some echo or a lot based on what you choose.

The display does dim itself when not in use, then lights up as it senses your hand. It worked properly 80% of the time. In those other times, it just starts flashing from dim to bright, and it can get distracting.

The main feature of the audio amplifier was the hard-wired “lag-free” communication. Having tested it using two GSX 1200 PRO amps, the claim held true. There were only a few instances where the mic was almost a half second behind. Other than those occurrences, it was entirely lag-free. Chat Link is only useful in eSports-type environments where there are multiple computers in close proximity. Granted, that’s what it’s advertised for. Those of you who don’t have that kind of setup, you can disregard this feature.

Final Thoughts

I’m very pleased with the functionality, the audio and build quality of the Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO gaming audio amplifier. Everything worked well straight out of the box. And it wouldn’t be a Sennheiser product without the fancy packaging of their product. There was even a screen protector on the display.

The price of the amp is a bit steep at $249.95, yet its number of features and slick looks makes it worth it. If you’re a serious gamer with a good chunk of change lying around, give this audio amplifier a try.

Moshi IonBank 5K Review

Moshi ionbank 5K review

Introducing the Moshi IonBank 5K Charger with Built-In USB Cables

Over the past few years, I’ve reviewed a handful of mobile battery chargers. While most rated average to below-average, the current crop of power banks have rated much higher. Moshi recently introduced their latest IonBank 5K and 10K models. Hoping the recent string of well-received power banks continued we had the opportunity to review their IonBank 5K for 2017. Much like the latest mobile phones, Moshi incorporated a USB-C port into their designs. So without further adieu, let’s take a closer look at one such charger in this Moshi IonBank 5K review.

Moshi ionbank 5K review

Google Pixel and Moshi IonBank 5K

• Slender, modern design
• Attractive metal and vegan leather finish

• No Apple® Lightning™ cable port

Moshi IonBank 5K Review

Design and Features

The Moshi IonBank 5K power bank offers much in the way of design and convenience. These are its strengths.

For one, it’s slender, more so than a man’s wallet, and will comfortably fit into your pants back pocket. It also has something the high majority of portable chargers don’t have, and that’s integrated USB cables. Sure, there are plenty of chargers on the market with a USB-C port, but only a few (such as the Incipio Offgrid 8000 mAh or Flux Charger Plus) have an actual built-in cable. Moshi’s IonBank has one leg up on these two brands with two built-in cables, one USB-A and one USB-C. Furthermore, both cables are hidden under the vegan leather flap. Based on my research Moshi is the only brand (premium or otherwise) that offers more than one cable or this hideaway feature.

The downside is the battery capacity. Per its description, the IonBank 5K has a capacity of 5150 mAh. While this is enough to recharge the newest Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S models, it can only do so 1.5x before it requires its own recharge.

The IonBank 5K is an attractive product. It combines a gunmetal gray aluminum case with a vegan leather accent. Underneath the accent is what makes the IonBank stand out from the competition–its USB cable hideaway. As seen in the first photo, here’s the USB-A and USB-C cables.

Moshi ionbank 5K review

As you see in the images above, there’s the power button, LED indication, the input USB-A port, and the two hidden output ports.

Like many of the chargers on the market, you can simultaneously charge the IonBank while charging two mobile devices. Unlike most other brands, you don’t need to worry about the USB cables.

LED indication is easy to understand. Think of each light as a quarter’s worth of power. If one light is flashing, the IonBank is charging, or it’s a low battery warning.

The IonBank 5K has dimensions of 4.76″ x 3.23″ x 0.51″ and weighs in at 5.71 ounces. Fully charging the battery takes approximately 3-4 hours.

For those of you who pay attention to specifications, here’s what you’re looking for.

Specifications
• DC 5V 2.4A Input
• DC 5V 3.4A (max) Output

What’s In The Box?
• IonBank 5K charger
• User Manual

Circuit
• Over-voltage
• Over-discharge
• Over-current

Protections
• Overheating
• Overcharge
• Short circuit

Read:   Moshi Avanti Headphones Review

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a mobile battery charger with around 5K mAh of capacity, you can get one for ¼ of the IonBank’s $80 price. You should note that you would be buying a charger with fewer features. With that said, the Moshi IonBank 5K is at or near the top of its product category regarding features.

If you’re looking at a competitors product without a built-in USB-C cable, just remember that you’ll need one to connect to your phone. For example, look at the mophie powerstation XL power bank. While that charger is $10 less than the IonBank, it requires you to purchase a USB-C cable which costs $20.

Guess which mobile product costs more now?

We’ve looked at products from ADATA, Anker, RAVPower, ZeroLemon, and more. While they manufacture good-to-great power banks, they’re all slightly different in size, capacity, and features. In the end, you’re posed with the Feature vs. Value proposition. Only you know what your needs are, so choose wisely.

ADATA A10050QC Power Bank Review

ADATA A10050QC Power Bank review

Searching for a battery charger to a mobile device used to be an easy thing. If it could charge your phone once and had a USB port, we were good-to-go. As mobile phones got larger, they required a greater battery life. Thus chargers had to increase in size too. Now it’s 2017 and new mobile phones like the Galaxy S8 and the Google Pixel have altered our shopping habits yet again thanks to something called USB-C. Because this new USB connection is game changer, we’re directed to look for and buy a new battery charger. Brands like ADATA, Moshi, and others, have stepped up to the plate and introduced new models. So without further adieu, let’s take a closer look at one such charger in this ADATA A10050QC Power Bank review.

ADATA A10050QC Power Bank review

ADATA A10050QC Power Bank Review

Design and Features

Upon first glance, you may have said to yourself that this device actually looks kind of cool. This ADATA Power Bank comes in two eye-catching metallic colors, blue and titanium grey, both with a sandblasted finish. Now forget about the color and finish for a moment. What’s actually neat is the design. ADATA has taken their A10050 Power Bank design and made them ergonomic with the A10050QC. Now it’s designed to fit in the palm of your hand, with grooved sides for your fingers and thumb. Good luck dropping it.

No more cylinders. No more boxes. This ergonomic design is a welcome change to the market.

ADATA A10050QC Power Bank review

As you see in the images above, on one end are the listed specs. On the other, there’s the power button, LED indication, the input port, and the two output ports. It’s pretty straightforward.

Like many of the chargers on the market, you can simultaneously charge the Power Bank while charging two mobile devices. Just remember to have enough cables to go around.

LED indication is easy to understand. Think of each light as a quarter’s worth of power. If one light is flashing, the Power Bank is charging, or it’s a low battery warning.

The A10050QC has dimensions of 4.13″ x 2.52″ x 0.90″ and weighs in at 8.71 ounces. Fully charging the battery takes approximately 6-7 hours; something you may want to do overnight.

For those of you who pay attention to specifications, here’s what you’re looking for.

Circuit Protections:

• Over-voltage
• Over-discharge
• Over-current

• Overheating
• Overcharge
• Short circuit

Specifications:

Input
• DC 5V/2.5A (Micro USB)

Output
• DC 5V 2.5A (USB-A)
• DC 5-6V 3A (QC3.0)
• DC 6-9V 2A (QC3.0)
• DC 9-12V 1.5A (QC3.0)
• Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 (USB-C)

Read:   Review: Best Touchscreen Gloves -- Moshi Digits

Remember that game-changing USB-C port mentioned in the opening paragraph? Incorporating Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, this USB-C port allows you charge a mobile product from 0 to 80% charge in no more than 30 minutes. Now that’s sweet.

What’s In The Box?

  • A10050QC Charger
  • Micro USB Cable
  • User Manual

Final Thoughts

At $40, the ADATA A10050QC Power Bank is the clear winner in its category by features and price. Want a second opinion? Fine, we’ll give you one.

We compared this ADATA Power Bank against similar products from myCharge and Patriot Memory. The closest myCharge gets to the A10050QC is with their RazorPlatinum. It provides an additional 3350 mAh hours of battery capacity, but at over twice the price.

The nearest Patriot gets gets to the ADATA is with their FUEL Active 9000. From the description, you can already guess it offers 1000 mAh less battery capacity. While it’s $5 lower in price over the ADATA, it lacks a USB-C port but adds a flashlight feature. Speaking of the flashlight feature, if it’s a must have, there’s an ADATA product for that, the P20000D Power Bank.

As you can see, from a feature and value perspective, the ADATA A10050QC Power Banks reigns supreme in 2017.ADATA A10050QC Power Bank review

There’s one final thing. As I mentioned, this Power Bank comes in two colors: blue and titanium gray. I believe a third color, possibly a bolder color like red, would be a welcome addition in mid-2017 .

ADATA Power Banks are available online at Amazon (see link below) and Newegg for about $40.

Gaming: Sennheiser GSP 350 Headset Review

04/05/2017 By Zach Can

Sennheiser GSP 350 Headset Review

Sennheiser is one of my all-time favorite headphone manufacturers. Their Game One was the first gaming headset I tested, and it was love at first sight. The feel of the soft velvet ear cups on and around my ears for the first time was quite the sensation. It was something that can only be felt once. I promise to give an unbiased review unto Sennheiser’s new GSP 350 PC gaming headset. Will it shatter my expectations, just like the Game One had done to me three years ago? So without further adieu, let’s take a closer look in this Sennheiser GSP 350 headset review.

Read:   Libratone Q Adapt On-Ear Headphones Review

Sennheiser GSP 350 Headset Review

Sennheiser Design

The first thing I’d like to mention is the ease of access swivel to mute feature on the microphone. Like on its sister product, the Game One headset, the ease of access swivel to mute feature is back. Another ease of access feature is the volume switch on headset making changes to volume hassle-free. There are no game menus to navigate, and no Alt+Tab to strike. Another new attribute of the headset includes its top-notch Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound, which I’ll touch more on later.

The plush velvet ear cups present on the Game One headset are not present on the GSP 350 headset. The latter is covered with some superb black leather earcups that I’ve gamed for a consecutive 12 hours and received little-to-no discomfort. The red-colored fabric padding on the top of the headset could use some improvement. The Game One and even Audio Technica ATH-AG1 headset best it with their designs.

The GSP 350 headset is adjustable using the notch system to fit large and small on extreme ends of the spectrum. It’s much more compact when compared to the Game One, ATH-AG1, or the HyperX Cloud Revolver.

[soliloquy id=”7818″]

This headset requires software to achieve its full capabilities, such as enabling the Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound. An equalizer function balances for music, eSport, or games, noise reduction and sidetone for the microphone. The sidetone feature is a little weird upon hearing feedback for the first time when I used the mic, but I ended up enjoying it more than having none. The software runs well, better than the undercooked Hera software of Gamdias. I did have a couple of issues with it, but nothing a simple reinstall and restart couldn’t fix.

There’s one last thing. The cable isn’t braided like the Game One headset, meaning the cable can coil upon itself which gets a bit annoying.

Performance

The Dolby 7.1 surround sound feature adds to the GSP 350 headphones and any gaming experience.

Mad Max sounds perfect! Hearing the sandy atmosphere echo through the surround sound was wonderful. Killing Floor 2 caused me a jump every time I heard an enemy directly behind.

No need to fear, the GSP 350 headset packs power into its smaller frame. I find myself having difficulty going back to the standard stereo setting on this or any gaming headphones. Without a doubt, I know that this is going to be my new go-to headset, replacing the HyperX Cloud II, thanks to its sound quality and easy to access features.

Just like on the more expensive Sennheiser gaming headsets, the microphone quality is exquisite. Of the dozen or so gaming headsets withing our sample library, it’s one of the best we have. The software is incredibly easy to use. Even a monkey could figure it out.

Final Thoughts

As I’ve stated above, this Sennheiser GSP 350 is my new primary gaming headset. It’s a good thing too as I’m a big fan of the Sennheiser brand. When comparing two Sennheiser gaming headsets, you’ll notice there’s a $110 price difference between the Game One and the GSP 350. Even at a lower retail price of $140, the GSP 350 gives you beautiful stereo and Dolby 7.1 surround sound, a noise-cancelling boom mic, and close to the same level of comfort as found in the more expensive Game One.

If Value is an important ranking factor in the purchase of a gaming headset, then it’s safe to say we all know which one has more.

These gaming headphones are worth your time and consideration when looking at the $100-150 price range.

The Sennheiser GSP 350 gaming headphones are available for purchase on Amazon (see link below) as well as the Sennheiser website.
