Gaming: Tt eSPORTS Cronos Riing RGB 7.1 Headphones Review

Tt eSPORTS Cronos Riing RGB 7.1 headphones review

Thermaltake through its Tt eSPORTS brand has rolled out some unique gaming products in 2017. One such example was that they’re one of the first companies to release a gaming mouse with a fingerprint scanner. Thermaltake’s practice is “Quality, Performance, and Reliability.” One of this year’s releases was the Cronos Riing RGB 7.1 gaming headset. (It genuinely upsets me that “Riing” is spelled this way.) To be confident enough to have a spelling deviation like this, the product better be good. Not too long ago we got our hands on the Cronos Riing RGB. Is this headset a worthy addition to your gaming rig? Let’s take a closer look in this Tt eSPORTS Cronos Riing RGB 7.1 headphones review.

Per the press release, “It comes packed with features and latest tech offering up an oversized 50 mm state-of-the-art tilting neodymium driver, true RGB engineered 16.8 million color illumination amongst 8 different lighting effects, and the latest 7.1 premium virtual surround sound technology to offer the most immersive 3D sound experience to ensure you hear all sounds with pinpoint accuracy for that all-important competitive edge.”

Design

The gaming headset comes in an all sleek black color. When you plug it in, the control dongle, the RGB aspect on each ear cup, and heck, even a line on the microphone lights up. This light on the microphone lights up red when it’s both un-muted and muted, which is a little confusing. I had expected the microphone light to turn white indicating it’s not muted, but no luck. The mic can be extended out of its little cubby hole, and then adjusted.

The ear cups pivot to a flat position allowing for effortless storage. They’re made from soft memory foam and fit snug over your ear. How the headset fits over your head is a bit of a problem. The Cronos Riing RGB 7.1 headset uses an elastic/spring type of fitting, where the “headband” slowly adjusts to your head. While it’s awkward the first time you put it on, it gradually conforms to your head. It’s not a bad fit, just inconvenient at first.

The control dongle has a Tt eSPORTS logo, volume control, 7.1 surround, microphone mute, and specific volume modes, reminiscent of the Sennheiser Gaming audio amplifier. The headphones come with software that is easily installed.

Performance

The first thing I noticed is the microphone volume is unusually low, even when maxed out using the software. And there’s an annoying buzz of static. It’s not noticeable when actual audio is going through them, but it’s audible without. Nonetheless, the audio comes out clean. The headset’s 7.1 virtual surround sound has more reverb than I would like, and those special audio effects don’t offer enough value. In fact, most of them lower the sound quality, while one sounds exactly like the regular audio. You can set the speed and mic volume, and master volume.

The lightning effects look cool, but you can’t even see the colors when you’re wearing them. It makes for great video when everyone around you can observe the colors lit up. Eight effects come with the headset’s software: Static, Pulse, Spectrum Running, Music Rhythm, Single Blink, Double Blink, Rapid Blink, and Rapid Pulse.

During gameplay of Rainbox Six Siege, the headphones performed quite well. I managed to hear roamers in the game trying to outflank us. However, according to my teammates, the microphone was overly quiet. It might have to do with the fact that it’s a bit behind your head. Regardless, I had to turn up the volume output for my microphone.

Overall, this is where the headphones shined most, helping track people moving around me better than my usual earbuds. After 1-2 hours of gaming, it started hurting my ears from too much pressure. This soreness is not something we look forward to with headphones. If your ears are sore after gaming, it’s a really bad sign of how much pressure is being placed on them. Another item to note is the earcups get warm-to-hot as their ventilation isn’t up to par.

Final Thoughts

In summary, the Tt eSPORTS Cronos Riing RGB 7.1 headphones come with 50 mm neodymium drivers, eight lighting effects, 16.8 million colors, 7.1 virtual surround sound, software, in-line control, and a fold-flat design.

The gaming headphones are good, but nothing sets them apart from the competition. They’re very similar to the Gamdias HEBE M1 RGB headphones in the way of software and RGB color.

For a list price of $89, this headset leans toward the higher-end of the gaming accessories spectrum. If this one doesn’t fit your needs, there are 17 Tt eSPORTS gaming headset models and color patterns currently available. We’re sure there’s at least one worth your time and consideration.

All-in-all, this gaming headset (and software) earned a 3.5 out of 5-star rating. There are plenty of gaming headsets available with a variety of features, so compare away until you find the right one for you.

Gamdias Hermes P2 RGB Keyboard Review

As 2017 comes to an end, Gamdias continues to roll out new gaming hardware with two new successors to the Hermes P1 RGB keyboard. These are, of course, the Hermes P2 RGB and the Hermes P3 RGB keyboards. This review focuses on the former, the Hermes P2 RGB. This latest piece of gaming hardware adds “innovative optical technology with dust and spill resistance, individually hot swappable keys, and a host of new features and improvements” to the Hermes lineup. We’ve seen how the Hermes P1 performs. Is this successor able to hold up against its predecessor? Will it stand out on its own? Let’s take a peak in our Gamdias HERMES P2 RGB keyboard review.

HERMES P2 Design and Features

The Hermes P2 keyboard has the standard fare one USB slot requirement working in both 3.0 and 2.0 formats. It has everyone’s favorite multimedia keys, but unlike its predecessor, it has a volume scroll wheel. Gamdias’ trademark keys are not forgotten, such as the key to lock the keyboard from an input, right mouse button input, brightness control, lighting modes, screenshot, and the WASD-Arrow Key flip. The font has returned to a much more generic, basic look. I prefer the stylistic approach which made the Hermes P1 pop. It’s a tad wider than the original model plus it grew in length, thanks to a sturdy non-removable wrist plate which is a very welcome addition.

The switches have a 50 million push-button life cycle that will probably outlast your use for the keyboard, but it’s way better than the other way around. Looking below the volume scroll wheel, you’ll find that the toggle keys light up in blue when activated instead of your standard green or red.

The lighting effects aren’t going to blind you like Patriot’s V770 (see inline post above,) but they aren’t as impressive as the Hermes P1. Maybe it’s because of the metal plate stabilizers, but the colors were brighter and more vibrant. Honestly, it’s a bit short in the lighting department. The Hera software that works with Hermes P2 appears to be rushed, as is not on par with other Gamdias components. There’s more on this topic below. A lot of the lighting patterns have been carried over, nearly all of which are still limited to just one color. “Neon” and “Wave” are the only ones that cycle through colors.

The keys are well protected from dust and any spills, with a switch cover on each key preventing any liquid from getting inside.

Gamdias HERA Software

I’m somewhat upset with what’s happened here with the software. On previous Gamdias keyboards it was good-to-great, but on this keyboard not so much. Recently I sent Gamdias a support request informing them of the issues I encountered. It’s only been a couple of days since. Once the problems have been resolved, I’ll be sure to update this write-up.

Currently, it’s messy under the “Keyboard Luminance” tab. The sliders for the RGB don’t work and are not clickable by mouse. Values have to be manually edited by number. The whole part of the keyboard is to be able to make the “16.8 million colors.”

On the “Custom Pattern” screen where one can bind colors to any key they want, some keys that aren’t bindable. It’s just not registered by the software, such as F10, Home, and Num 4.

Furthermore, why has the Fn-Windows button switch has been removed? It was such a great option. Consecutive attack mode is missing as well. There are more lighting options on Hermes P1 with 3x more color presets.

Conclusion

Pros:
• Sturdy build wrist rest

Cons:
• Buggy software at the moment
• Lacking in lighting options over predecessor
• $20 increase in price

Straight up we preferred the predecessor over this current model. There doesn’t appear to be any improvements, nor is the board “cutting edge.” If you wanted a similar-looking gaming keyboard, you should purchase the Hermes P1 RGB. With more options and better lighting, the original version is simply a better keyboard.

The Hermes P2 RGB keyboard lists for $140 on the Gamdias site, while the Hermes P1 RGB lists for $120.

Patriot Viper V770 Gaming Keyboard Review

Viper V770 gaming keyboard review

Patriot started out 2017 strong with two prominent keyboards, the V730 and the V770. The V730 is a keyboard for those new and casual gamers. While its big brother, the V770, is sure to “be the envy of all your friends at the next LAN party.” Right away I can state that you’ll be above and beyond the envy of all your gaming friends. How does such a keyboard do this? We’ve spent the past month with the Viper V770 RGB mechanical gaming keyboard, learning every detail of it. Is this gaming accessory a worthy addition to your rig? Without further delay, let’s take a closer look in this Patriot Viper V770 gaming keyboard review.

Viper V770 Gaming Keyboard Review

V770 Design and Features

Per Roger Shinmoto, Patriot VP of Product Design, “Our new RGB V770 keyboard is a high-end, feature-rich keyboard, designed with the serious gamer in mind. With thoughtful design, onboard media controls, dedicated macros, and a high degree of customization, the V770 is a great compliment to any high-end rig.”

The Viper V770 keyboard is one of those ‘Big Boys’ which requires two USB slots. This gives it those added features like five programmable keys, eight buttons to quickly control the lighting options, media switches, and a scroll wheel to control volume. It’s also physically large at 19.5″, approximately 2″ longer than such popular keyboards like the HyperX Alloy Elite and the Corsair K70 LUX. You can thank the five dedicated macro keys on the left for half of the difference in length.

The Kailh Red switches with their 50 million push-button life cycle are terrific for those FPS games. They’re quite sensitive (2.0±0.6 mm pre-travel, 4 mm total travel) requiring little activation force. It took me a couple of days to stop making accidental presses. While we’re still on the design if you look under the volume wheel you’ll notice there’s no indicator for which toggle keys you have enabled (Num, Caps Lock, Scrl Lock). That’s because the keys when enabled light up in white. When disabled, they return to whatever color you have currently selected.

Viper V770 gaming keyboard review
Viper V770 gaming keyboard review

The numerous lighting effects are great. They’re better than most mid-tier and some upper-tier gaming keyboards. The keyboard has about 11 lighting options, 10 of which you can change both the brightness and speed of. A lot of these lighting options can be in RGB or one color. You can create up to 5 custom lighting profiles too.

The keys are top-mounted over a brushed aluminum faceplate with a unique font that helps it stand out from the crowd. The finish on the keyboard is attractive and appears to be fingerprint resistant.

There’s also has a detachable magnetic palm rest which holds better than the Gamdias P1 RGB, which occasionally pops off. Sadly, it does smudge a little. The palm rest lights up and has its own lighting options, four to be exact. Two customizable solid color options with the remaining two as RGB only. Beware, the edges of the wrist plate are sharp, so don’t go knocking it off your desk. It could strike your foot or leg and cause some pain.

You can also re-program almost every key. There’s the USB 2.0 and audio pass-through ports on opposite sides of the keyboard. I don’t find much use for the pass-through ports as it leads to messy wires all over. But there is this one exception. On the back center of the board, there’s slide out phone holder. This feature comes in very handy when you want to charge your mobile phone.

Viper V770 gaming keyboard review
Viper V770 gaming keyboard review

On the back end of the right-of-center braided cord, there are two USB plugs plus one for headphones and another for a microphone to connect to your PC enclosure. If you’re connecting via USB 2.0, use both connectors. If you’re connecting via USB 3.0, you may only need to use one connector. If you’re looking to use either of the keyboard pass-through ports, then connect either the microphone and headset jacks to the PC enclosure. The underside is plastic with six rubber foot pads and two retractable legs.

Editor’s Note: I kept finding myself striking the Caps Lock key and having to correct my misspelling constantly. I’ve not encountered this issue on other gaming boards. I don’t know what to make of it.

Patriot Viper Keyboard V770 Software

The high majority of today’s higher-end gaming keyboards come with software to adjust the device, and the Viper V770 is no different. This software support (Version 2.1) configures the RGB LED lighting effects, palm rest effects, profiles, macros, response time, and report rate, just to name a handful.

Truth be told, you don’t actually need the software. Almost every adjustment can be made with either the buttons on the keyboard or a combo of Fn + insert key. The software though is lightweight and clean. It didn’t even require a restart. It worked right away and was very easy to use.

From the main page, seen in the image gallery, you can adjust the 11 light effects, the brightness, and the speed on all but Static mode. There are seven starter colors, all adjustable on a pop-up color map, with an 8th option that’s multi-color. Under the five lighting profiles, the first two of which are displayed below, there are now Keymap and DIY check boxed options.

Under Palm Rest Effects, there are four of the most popular lighting effects. You can alter the direction originating from the left or right, its brightness, and speed. Like the keyboard, you have access to 16.8M color options on the detachable wrist rest. But this is only so for the Static and Breathing selections. The remaining two choices are RGB only. As I’m sure you just figured out, you can configure the speeds and brightness of the keyboard and palm rest separately.

Below this, there are check boxes to select Game Mode and Windows Key Lock, plus slider controls for Response Time and Report Rate. It’s all here.

At the bottom left, you’ve got Profiles and Macros. In the 4th gallery image above is a display of the Macros window. Create and delete Macro(s), Keystroke Input, and Options are all there. Clicking Profiles opens another dialog box (not shown) where you can import and export.

Conclusion

Pros:
• Sturdy build, backlit wrist rest
• Excellent software
• Near complete customization
• Over a dozen lighting effects

Cons:
• No place to store the key puller
• No gaming key caps
• Some sharp edges

Overall, Patriot Memory has created a great keyboard with plenty of features. Furthermore, they’ve done a great job with the lighting options. I’m convinced many people will like this keyboard as much as I did. You can tell there was a lot of thought put into it. Once you add up everything: lighting, macros, easy software, design, etc., this Viper V770 turned out to be one fantastic keyboard. If you want to have a big league keyboard, this is the real deal.

The Viper V770 RGB mechanical gaming keyboard is available for purchase on Amazon for under $120 (see link below) as well as on the Patriot Store at a list price of just under $140. All-in-all, this is a well-designed RGB mechanical gaming keyboard which easily earned a 4.5 out of 5-star rating.

Gamdias HERMES P1 RGB Keyboard Review

It seems like a month doesn’t pass without the folks at Gamdias introducing something fresh to the PC Gaming market. Back in July, they’ve expanded their line by one with the introduction of a new mechanical gaming keyboard with Kailh blue switches. This new board–the HERMES P1 RGB yields 16.8 million colors, four game modes, and a dozen lighting patterns. There have been some design changes since the previous HERMES RGB keyboard such as an all aluminum front plate. How does this keyboard stack up with Gamdias’ others keyboards? Without further delay, let’s take a closer look in this Gamdias HERMES P1 RGB keyboard review.

Gamdias HERMES P1 RGB Keyboard Review

Key Features of the HERMES P1 RGB Keyboard

  • 16.8M color illuminated backlighting
  • Four pre-configured lighting zones
  • Twelve lighting effects
  • Kailh Blue mechanical switches
  • On-the-fly record macro key settings
  • Six key / N-Key rollover
  • 100% anti-ghosting support
  • Aircraft-grade aluminum front plate

Hermes P1 RGB Design and Features

Gamdias HERMES P1 RGB Keyboard Review
Gamdias HERMES P1 RGB Keyboard Review

Like its predecessor, the HERMES P1 RGB is mechanical gaming keyboard with a 50 million push button life cycle. It comes with 16.8 million colors, a dozen different lighting effects to choose from, and four preset gaming modes: League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Dota 2, and World of Tanks. You can change the brightness (4 levels) and speed of the effects to your liking. The brains of the keyboard are in the ARM® Cortex®-M3 32-bit microprocessor.

The keys have a new font design that is refreshing and still easy to read. The aircraft-grade brushed aluminum front plate is a nice touch which doesn’t smudge easily. Metal plate stabilizers return from the HERMES 7 Color keyboard adding more flair. (The metal front plate have become quite popular in 2017.)

Consecutive attack mode also makes a return. The keyboard comes with its own key puller. It has all those standard Gamdias’ features like the multimedia keys, two macro buttons, and the key locker if you wanted to vacuum your keyboard real quick.

Gamdias HERMES P1 RGB Keyboard Review
Gamdias HERMES P1 RGB Keyboard Review

The HERMES P1 RGB can be used with or without the HERA software. One option which pleased me is the ability to switch out the Windows Key with the Fn button. I was like, “Oh yeah. That’s a nice touch.”

Flipping the keyboard over, you’ll notice three channels to direct the 1.8 Meter braided cable. The keyboard legs have improved over its predecessor and are now much wider. (We hope it was our suggestion that led to the upgrade.) The key puller is now attached to the underside.

To be completely honest not too much has changed from the HERMES RGB to the HERMES P1 RGB. It’s more of a hybrid combination of its former self and the HERMES 7 Color keyboard bringing their greatest features into one keyboard.

Sadly, there are two disappointments to report, first being the removable wrist rest. In our tests, it came off too easily. We wish it fit more securely because as soon as you even move the keyboard, it pops right off. Finally, most of the lighting effects are one color only. On the 7 Color board, the lighting effects played across all colors. The HERMES P1 RGB would have been near perfect if it were not for these two small issues. The keyboard handles and performs very similarly to the HERMES RGB.

• Very similar to the Hermes RGB

If you were having trouble deciding on whether to purchase the Hermes RGB or 7 Color keyboard, then you need to look towards this newer one. It’s got everything they do and a little more. I’m pleased with this Hermes P1 RGB keyboard. Still, I’m kind of sad about the lighting effects being mostly one color though. I unquestionably recommend this board. It’s already become my new main gaming keyboard.

The Gamdias Hermes P1 RGB mechanical keyboard has a list price of just under $120 and is available for purchase at Amazon and the Gamdias website.

Enermax Ostrog ADV Case Review

08/07/2017 By Zach Can

Enermax Ostrog ADV case review

Over the past year, Enermax has given us at Beantown a taste of their higher tier products such as the Triathlor ECO 1000W PSU. Now it was time we checked out one of their cases. The Ostrog ADV mid tower case comes in three distinct colors: red, green, and blue. It has some defining features such as its wide array of light emitting diodes, a variety of lighting options, and its tool-less design. So, is the case worth your hard-earned money? Let’s find out and take a closer look in this Enermax Ostrog ADV case review.

Enermax Ostrog ADV Case Review

Design

Looking at the front of the case there’s a large acrylic window to the left with the standard black metal panel to the right. At the top of the front panel, there are three small metal mesh grills. These grills can be removed by pressing on the tabs to install your Blu-ray or DVD drives (or other various utilities.) Below this area is a large grill which can just as easily be removed. Behind that houses two 120 mm, 6-mode Vegas LED fans. The outline of the front panel is that of one giant LED strip.

Moving to the top of the case are a series of buttons, lights, inputs, and one switch. On the lower row you’ll notice the restart button, hard drive activity LED, power LED, power button and the 3-speed fan controller. Fan speeds are 900, 1200, and 1500 rpm. The upper row features two USB 3.0 slots, microphone and headphone inputs, two USB 2.0 slots, and the lighting setting button. After that is a large metal mesh grill which is easily removed by a pull tab and outlined with another LED light strip.

On the back side panel of the case is your standard hole for the motherboard and removable grills for a video card. It’s worth noting that the video card grills match the color you’ve selected for the case. It should also be pointed out that your VGA card should not exceed a length of 414 mm.

Looking to install more fans, you can do so. Just check the specs below for the details.

The overall dimensions of the Ostrog ADV case are 19.41″ x 8.46″ x 20.31″. As you can see from these values, this case is quite a bit larger than the typical mid-tower case. The weight of the unit is 15.8 lbs.

Inside the Ostrog ADV

Depending on the color you chose, the backing on the inside will match. Looking in from the acrylic panel are six hard drive bays with three smaller drive bays on top. There are plenty of gaps throughout the case to thread wiring and even to bundle up wiring, with rubber grommets offering additional protection. There’s a third fan (an Enerflo model) in the top left corner. Installation of my hardware into the case was a breeze which took about an hour max. Everything was visible and right out into the open.

Enermax Ostrog ADV case review

There’s ATX, Micro ATX, and Mini ITX support, sufficient room around the top of the case to install water cooling, and the hard drive cage is removable for those huge graphic cards. There’s even plenty of color coordination inside to go along with the LED lighting making the case Pop.

Enermax Ostrog ADV case review

There are two issues worth noting. The first point of concern is the amount of space between the right-side case cover and behind the main board tray, where all the hard drives are stored and connected in. The website states “a comfortable cable routing behind the mainboard tray.” It didn’t feel like that. I have four hard drives, and the amount of space that they provide you is minimal. I literally had to force the wires in to get the case cover on, which in turn makes it difficult to get the case on.

The second issue and one probably unique to us is the top piece of the case was cracked upon delivery. This crack could a problem with the design of the top piece, or it could be a packaging or shipping issue. We’ll never know for sure, but it’s something we passed along to Enermax.

A replacement part was issued, but when it arrived, it was missing a ton of wiring, a couple of the wire caps, and even the power button. Fortunately, we saved the original top piece, taking the missing materials from one and transferring to the other. We were a little disappointed that the new top piece didn’t incorporate the missing materials.

Conclusion

All-in-all, the Ostrog ADV is a fairly well-designed case which we enjoy using to this day. It’s vibrant and color-filled with red LED lighting. We did notice a couple of things that were a cause for concern. Some paint chipped off when we removed the video card grills, and a there’s a shortage of space to plug in your hard drives. We feel this latter one may be a big issue for consumers.

The Enermax Ostrog ADV case lists for $120 and is available for purchase at Fry’s, Newegg, and Amazon (see link below.) If you need an upgrade and some additional room in a mid-tower computer case, plus sick bright LED lighting, this is it.

Gaming: Plantronics RIG 600 Headset Review

07/26/2017 By Zach Can

Plantronics RIG 600 headset review

Plantronics is back at it again with their series of RIG gaming headsets. They’ve been on a roll the past couple of years releasing gaming headsets in this successful and ever-expanding series. Released late last year, the RIG 600 is cross-platform compatible with the big three: Xbox, PS4, and PC. Is the RIG 600 an improvement over their RIG 400 and Flex LX headphones? Without further delay, let’s take a closer look in this Plantronics RIG 600 headset review.

• Classic, all-black design
• Solid construction, flexible, yet sturdy
• Soft memory foam earcups
• Very comfortable fit

• No wireless capability (which is okay)

Plantronics RIG 600 Headset Review

RIG 600 Design and Fit

Upon unboxing the item, the first thing I noticed was how lightweight the headset was at 247 grams. The design is very clean with markings in gold and black. This created a look of luxury. This look is further reinforced by the (gold-stitched) cushioned headband and earcups. The headband is adjustable and can fit a broad range of head frames with its 16 adjustment settings. This comes to roughly 2″ on each side, thus yielding a more comfortable fit. The inside headband is made from a deep black colored, perforated and breathable fabric.

The outer headband surface, as well as the ear pads, are made from a deep black colored vegan leather. These ear pads appear to contain some form of memory foam. You don’t need to worry about which headphone is left or right. A rather large “R” is visible on the inside of its respective ear pad. Cups can rotate 90° degrees in and roughly 10° out. Included in the box are two interchangeable 3.5 mm cables and a splitter which I will go into further detail later.

Plantronics RIG 600 headset review

The Plantronics RIG 600 headset is definitely a step up from the Turtle Beach Call of Duty AW headset that I’ve been using. The former’s pillow–like earcups and headband provide such a comfortable experience that it feels like it isn’t even there. These are a pair of headphones which you can keep on for hours without that feeling of having your temples pinched due to the hard plastic feel of lower-quality gaming headphones.

RIG 600 Features

The RIG 600 is designed with 40mm dynamic drivers to provide a balanced listening experience. I decided to test the headset first on the Sony PS4, and the RIG 600 did an excellent job producing the sounds in Resident Evil 7 Biohazard. With every footstep, I could hear the puddles I stepped in, as well as the blades of grass, and the creaking floorboards. This made an already scary game more terrifying.

Next, I tested the headset on my Xbox One S opting for Final Fantasy XV, a game which offers a beautifully crafted soundtrack, cut scenes, and battle sequences. The headphones did a great job replaying the music with some of the finer details such as sailing on the water and hearing the satisfying sound of a blade striking the enemy. The soundtrack is never loud enough to overwhelm the dialogue which is perfect for this game.

Plantronics RIG 600 headset reviewThe only issue I had with this headset was that there wasn’t an adjustable controller for volume on the 3.5 mm lines. On the Xbox One S, I had to get into the settings to adjust the sound which wasn’t all that difficult, yet might not be obvious to most.

The overall construction is well executed and shows a quality build. The headphones include a port for wired audio.

Audio Performance

While it doesn’t have the deep lows of a pair of Beats headphones, I was surprised at how good this headset was at providing a balance experience throughout the different genres of music. I found rocking out to the sound of an acoustic guitar for country music to waiting for the beat to drop on an EDM song. It was a very satisfying experience.

Conclusion

Versatility is probably the most attractive feature of the RIG 600. It was incredibly easy to switch and use the different 3.5mm cables between devices. One 3.5mm cable has a mic attached used for gaming, the other music listening purposes. Set up is very easy, no software needs to be installed and is plug-and-play. There isn’t a long mess of cables like with some other gaming headsets.

The RIG 600 gaming headset is quite comfortable even after a handful of hours of continuous gaming. This headset is available for purchase at Amazon (see link below) and the Plantronics website for $99.99. They seem like a good pickup for those who value great sound, comfort, and versatility. If you can find it for less than list, it’s a steal. You won’t be disappointed.

Gamdias ZEUS P1 RGB Gaming Mouse Review

06/25/2017 By Zach Can

Gamdias ZEUS P1 RGB gaming mouse review

It’s now 2017, and Gamdias has made its presence known in the gaming market. With their love of customization and RGB lighting, you (design your gaming environment) make it the way that best suits you. Their ZEUS P1 RGB mouse represents it well with 16.8 million colors of RGB lighting and 12,000 DPI at your disposal. I’ve spent this month of June with this mouse, customizing and learning every detail of it. So without further delay, let’s take a closer look in this Gamdias ZEUS P1 RGB gaming mouse review.

Gamdias ZEUS P1 RGB gaming mouse review

Pros:
• The mouse has a much smoother feel, more appealing to casual user
• Much higher DPI — 12,000 compared to 8,200
• RGB color scheme
• Textured rubber grips on the side

Cons:
• Only five extra buttons
• No ridges for thumb and pinky finger
• No weight system
• Couple of HERA settings are missing

Gamdias Zeus P1 RGB Gaming Mouse Review

Design

When compared to the ZEUS eSport Laser mouse, the P1 RGB has a much simpler design. The latter has five extra customizable buttons instead of the eight on the ZEUS eSport. The streaming lighting on the P1 RGB is hard to creatively put into words. There are 13 small segments that have their own illumination. The Gamdias logo’s color is not customizable, and will always glow red.

Unlike the ZEUS eSport, the P1 RGB has textured rubber grips where your thumb and pinky rest, giving you more grip to the mouse. The mouse fits in my hand comfortably and doesn’t displace any discomfort. Resolution can go up to 12,000 DPI delivering insane accuracy. It comes with HERA software support that configures the lighting, macros, buttons, timer, DPI, and sounds.

The P1 RGB is missing a couple of settings from the eSport mouse such as “Straight Path Correction,” the ability to change X-axis and Y-axis DPI independently, and the “Lift Off Setting.” The P1 RGB isn’t the eSports model, and it isn’t trying to be. The P1 RGB does not have a customizable weight which did not bother me, as the weight for the mouse felt right. This could be an issue for others though. The P1 RGB tracks optically (using LEDs) rather than a laser. In the past, laser mice have been able to hit higher DPI’s. It’s obviously not a problem for the P1 RGB as it’s capable of 12,000 DPI. The eSports mouse can only achieve 8,000 DPI.

Performance

I ran the ZEUS P1 RGB mouse at 2000 DPI for most of the testing but did try several different resolution settings. The 12,000 DPI setting was insanely accurate especially if you’re flicking the mouse around to make quick shots like in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

Conclusion

As a big fan of the ZEUS eSports laser mouse for its grip, for me, the ZEUS P1 RGB comes in a close second. It can’t beat the thumb and pinky ridges of the eSports mouse. It was an easy transition switching from the eSports mouse after falling for the P1’s lighting scheme.

Both are great mice! The P1 RGB can compete in the eSports sector in terms of DPI/accuracy, but the grip comes short of the mark.

The P1 RGB works great. It fits my hand perfectly, is quite responsive, and its optical LED is highly accurate as it lights up alongside the HERMES 7-Color mechanical keyboard. If you’re just getting into gaming and unsure of what mouse to get, or you’ve finally decided to ditch your old standard mouse, this ZEUS P1 RGB is a solid winner.

The list price of the ZEUS P1 RGB mouse is $79.99. Fortunately, you can get it on Amazon for $49.99. In the US, each gaming mouse comes with a 1-year warranty from date of purchase.

Gaming: Patriot Viper V361 & V370 Headsets Review

04/17/2017 By Zach Can

Patriot Viper V361 V370 headset review

Patriot is best known for their DRAM memory, flash and solid state drives, and memory cards, and they have quite the selection for each. Back in 2015, Patriot introduced their first line of Viper Gaming hardware which we covered here. Roughly two years have passed, and their latest line of Viper Gaming hardware is making its debut. First up are the Viper V361 and V370 gaming headsets. They’re nearly identical except the latter having RGB lighting. Both headphones come with 7.1 virtual surround sound and heavy bass mode. Are they a worthy addition to your gaming rig? Let’s take a closer look in this Patriot Viper V361 and V370 gaming headsets review.Patriot Viper V361 V370 headset review

Patriot Viper V361 & V370 Gaming Headsets

Design

The Viper V361 has the standard headphone design. It adjusts manually into position like many of today’s headphones. Controls are built into the headset, which we believe is a step in the right direction. We prefer this controller design over a big-and-bulky control box on the cord. There’s a slider for the volume and a switch for the “Ultra Bass Response” which I’ll go into further later. There is no need for a microphone mute button because there’s an amazing swivel to mute functionality. These functions are beneficial into moving the V361 and V370 away from your standard gaming headphone.

Both headsets have a broad range of heads they can fit. The cord is 2+ Meters in length with a stand out red-and-black braided pattern giving it extra durability, making it harder for the cable to coil on itself.

Both headphones are connected via USB. Each headset comes with two sets of earcups, leather, and vinyl, as the leather earcups can get quite sweaty in the summer.

The V361 lights up red when powered, while the V370 has RGB lighting which is customizable in the Viper Gaming software.

Performance

Patriot’s Viper software must be installed to enable the 7.1 virtual surround sound and configure the RGB lighting. The software works flawlessly for us. After the install, I just had to reboot, and we were good-to-go. The software’s user interface is clean and straightforward. You have options for volume on the mic, speakers.

Looking at the V370 headset, it comes with RGB lighting controls. The lighting controls have options for Static, Breathe, Blink, and Heartbeat. You can set the effect speed for most of them. Heartbeat produced a cool lighting effect as the headset would light up when sound was played.

Patriot Viper V361 V370 headset review
Patriot Viper V361 V370 headset review

The Ultra Bass Response (UBR) system is similar to that on the Gamdias HEBE M1 RGB. Any heavy bass that is played causes the headset to vibrate giving you a slight jolt.

Based on our testing, I’d say these headphones can be worn for up to 3 hours of constant use. Beyond that, they start to become uncomfortable. Our ears were always in contact with the membrane inside the headset. After extended play time, this can cause some redness and irritation, so limit your playtime. I tried to re-adjust this part of the headset but to no avail.

When gaming with the headset, the 7.1 virtual surround sound was most useful by accurately pinpointing an enemy you can’t see. Games such as Penumbra Black Plague and SOMA are taken to that next level of horror. The 7.1 surround sound brought out dread and fear from every corner.

Regarding RGB lighting, it’s one of those personal preference features best left up to you. If it’s something you want, then head towards the direction of the V370. Otherwise, the Viper V361 headset is the better choice.

Conclusion

For a $50 or $70 pair of headphones, these new Patriot Viper headsets truly deliver some high-end features for a low price: swivel-to-mute, ultra-bass response, no control box, and 7.1 virtual surround sound.

These headphones lean towards the higher-end of the spectrum than the lower-end. If you need a gaming headset that gets the job done well at a reasonable price, look no further. These Viper Gaming headphones are worth your time and consideration when looking within the $50-100 price range.

Gaming: Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO Amplifier Review

04/10/2017 By Zach Can

Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO Amplifier review

If you wear a Sennheiser gaming headset, then you already know how alluring and addictive they are. Some years ago, we got our hands on our first, their Game One gaming headset, and never let go. Since then, Sennheiser has continued to add to their gaming portfolio. About six months ago, they released two gaming audio amplifiers, the GSX 1000 and GSX 1200 PRO. Both audio amplifiers feature their “groundbreaking 7.1 virtual surround algorithm.” When I learned we were getting our hands on one to review, I became ecstatic. So without further adieu, let’s take a closer look in this Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO amplifier review.

Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO Amplifier Review

Design and Features

The GSX 1200 PRO amp comes out in a sleek box proudly displaying the LED screen. The device itself is surrounded by a cube with a kickstand that easily pops out from underneath. The raised dial display has a striking red color. There are touchscreen options for headphones/speakers, EQ balance, surround sound focus, stereo to 7.1, sidetone adjustment, and reverb. In the center of it all is the volume with the best volume slider I’ve ever felt. The metal ring around the display turns ever so effortlessly. The more you adjust the volume, the more addictive this action becomes.

Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO Amp review

On the sides of the cube, there’s microphone volume adjustment allowing for on-the-fly adjustment. On the back of the amplifier, there are connections for the microphone, headphones, speakers, power cord, and two chat link connections. The Chat Link connection is for up to eight GSX 1200 PRO amps to be linked up together to deliver hardwired communication. The audio amplifier also has four profiles for you to set and store your customized settings. You can switch to them with a tap of the finger.

Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO Amplifier reviewPerformance

The ability to switch between headphones and speakers comes in handy. It’s a quick, easy way to make changes without moving wires. EQ balance is nice, giving you the option to switch to Game, Music, Film, or Balanced. I didn’t use the Game setting too much because it made everything sound muffled.

The focus of the surround sound brings the sound right up front or far in the back. It actually sounded like it just moved five feet away. One of the main features of this amplifier is the 7.1 surround sound, and it delivers the goods. While it can’t beat the GSP 350 headsets actual 7.1 surround sound, it comes darn close.

We used this audio amplifier with two higher-end gaming headsets, the Sennheiser Game One and the Audio Technica ATH-AG1. The sounds from both headphones were spectacular.

Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO Amplifier review

The sidetone is adjustable to none, some, or a lot, along similar lines to the GSP 350 headset. The reverb adjustment, along with the stereo to 7.1 setting, radically changes how anything sounds. The reverb has none, some, or a lot, and with it enabled, makes any sound play like it was in a room, with some echo or a lot based on what you choose.

The display does dim itself when not in use, then lights up as it senses your hand. It worked properly 80% of the time. In those other times, it just starts flashing from dim to bright, and it can get distracting.

The main feature of the audio amplifier was the hard-wired “lag-free” communication. Having tested it using two GSX 1200 PRO amps, the claim held true. There were only a few instances where the mic was almost a half second behind. Other than those occurrences, it was entirely lag-free. Chat Link is only useful in eSports-type environments where there are multiple computers in close proximity. Granted, that’s what it’s advertised for. Those of you who don’t have that kind of setup, you can disregard this feature.

Final Thoughts

I’m very pleased with the functionality, the audio and build quality of the Sennheiser GSX 1200 PRO gaming audio amplifier. Everything worked well straight out of the box. And it wouldn’t be a Sennheiser product without the fancy packaging of their product. There was even a screen protector on the display.

The price of the amp is a bit steep at $249.95, yet its number of features and slick looks makes it worth it. If you’re a serious gamer with a good chunk of change lying around, give this audio amplifier a try.

Gaming: Sennheiser GSP 350 Headset Review

04/05/2017 By Zach Can

Sennheiser GSP 350 Headset Review

Sennheiser is one of my all-time favorite headphone manufacturers. Their Game One was the first gaming headset I tested, and it was love at first sight. The feel of the soft velvet ear cups on and around my ears for the first time was quite the sensation. It was something that can only be felt once. I promise to give an unbiased review unto Sennheiser’s new GSP 350 PC gaming headset. Will it shatter my expectations, just like the Game One had done to me three years ago? So without further adieu, let’s take a closer look in this Sennheiser GSP 350 headset review.

Sennheiser Design

The first thing I’d like to mention is the ease of access swivel to mute feature on the microphone. Like on its sister product, the Game One headset, the ease of access swivel to mute feature is back. Another ease of access feature is the volume switch on headset making changes to volume hassle-free. There are no game menus to navigate, and no Alt+Tab to strike. Another new attribute of the headset includes its top-notch Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound, which I’ll touch more on later.

The plush velvet ear cups present on the Game One headset are not present on the GSP 350 headset. The latter is covered with some superb black leather earcups that I’ve gamed for a consecutive 12 hours and received little-to-no discomfort. The red-colored fabric padding on the top of the headset could use some improvement. The Game One and even Audio Technica ATH-AG1 headset best it with their designs.

The GSP 350 headset is adjustable using the notch system to fit large and small on extreme ends of the spectrum. It’s much more compact when compared to the Game One, ATH-AG1, or the HyperX Cloud Revolver.

This headset requires software to achieve its full capabilities, such as enabling the Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound. An equalizer function balances for music, eSport, or games, noise reduction and sidetone for the microphone. The sidetone feature is a little weird upon hearing feedback for the first time when I used the mic, but I ended up enjoying it more than having none. The software runs well, better than the undercooked Hera software of Gamdias. I did have a couple of issues with it, but nothing a simple reinstall and restart couldn’t fix.

There’s one last thing. The cable isn’t braided like the Game One headset, meaning the cable can coil upon itself which gets a bit annoying.

Performance

The Dolby 7.1 surround sound feature adds to the GSP 350 headphones and any gaming experience.

Mad Max sounds perfect! Hearing the sandy atmosphere echo through the surround sound was wonderful. Killing Floor 2 caused me a jump every time I heard an enemy directly behind.

No need to fear, the GSP 350 headset packs power into its smaller frame. I find myself having difficulty going back to the standard stereo setting on this or any gaming headphones. Without a doubt, I know that this is going to be my new go-to headset, replacing the HyperX Cloud II, thanks to its sound quality and easy to access features.

Just like on the more expensive Sennheiser gaming headsets, the microphone quality is exquisite. Of the dozen or so gaming headsets withing our sample library, it’s one of the best we have. The software is incredibly easy to use. Even a monkey could figure it out.

Final Thoughts

As I’ve stated above, this Sennheiser GSP 350 is my new primary gaming headset. It’s a good thing too as I’m a big fan of the Sennheiser brand. When comparing two Sennheiser gaming headsets, you’ll notice there’s a $110 price difference between the Game One and the GSP 350. Even at a lower retail price of $140, the GSP 350 gives you beautiful stereo and Dolby 7.1 surround sound, a noise-cancelling boom mic, and close to the same level of comfort as found in the more expensive Game One.

If Value is an important ranking factor in the purchase of a gaming headset, then it’s safe to say we all know which one has more.

These gaming headphones are worth your time and consideration when looking at the $100-150 price range.

The Sennheiser GSP 350 gaming headphones are available for purchase on Amazon (see link below) as well as the Sennheiser website.
